Mariners Fall to St. Thomas

BRUNSWICK, Ga.- The Coastal Georgia women's basketball team (1-9, 0-3) fell to St. Thomas (9-0, 4-0) by a score of 86-61 on Thursday night in the Coffin Gym.

Seniors Sonia Forney and Joyce Jordan led the way offensively for the Mariners as they dropped in 20 points and 15 points, respectively. Nicole Hofmann also finished in double-digits with 10.

Kelsey Leedle and Azaria Varnado combined for 11 points to round out the major scorers for the Mariners.

St. Thomas had four players finish in double figures, led by Mya Moye who dropped 21 points on an efficient 9-16 shooting. Mya Victor stuffed the stat sheet, recording 11 points, eight rebounds five steals and three blocks off the bench. 

How It Happened:

1st QUARTER: The Mariners had a tough time getting their offense going in the opening quarter. They made just two field goals on 18 attempts while the Bobcats made seven field goals and hit five of their six free throw attempts to take an early 21-5 lead.

2nd QUARTER: Coastal Georgia got the ball inside more allowing Sonia Forney to record eight points. The Bobcats still outscored the Mariners in the quarter and went into halftime with a 37-19 lead.

3rd QUARTER: Coming out of the break, Brooke Bogatz and Kasey Gagan took over. In the third quarter, they combined for 15 points and shot a perfect 5-5 from the field that included three three-pointers. St. Thomas increased their lead and went into the final quarter up 66-35.

4th QUARTER: Although the game was out of reach, the Mariners did not stop fighting. Joyce Jordan dropped 10 points in the fourth quarter and as a team, the Mariners shot 52.9 from the field. St. Thomas, however, had no trouble closing out the game as they improved to 9-0 with an 86-61 win.

UP NEXT: The Mariners will host Florida Memorial at 2 pm on Saturday, Dec. 3.
