Box Score BRUNSWICK, Ga.- The Coastal Georgia women's basketball team (1-15, 0-7) lost to Talladega College (5-9, 0-8) by a score of 72-65 on Tuesday night in the Coffin Gym.
The Mariners were led by Joyce Jordan and Sonia Forney who combined for 39 points and 15 rebounds while shooting an efficient 16-29 from the field. Jordan knocked in four threes and dished out three assists.
Wings Nicole Hofmann and Gabby Litvak contributed 17 combined points and hit five threes between them. Hofmann also corralled three steals which lead the team and swatted away a shot.
For the Tornadoes, Makayla Transou lit up the Mariners' defense for 31 points while shooting 10-18 from the field and 4-6 from beyond the arc. Transou went off for 11 points in the final quarter to will the Tornadoes to win.
As a team, the Mariners shot extremely well from the field, hitting 50 percent of their shots and were 41.7 percent from the three-point line. However, they only attempted nine free throws while Talladega was able to get to the line for 21 attempts. Coastal Georgia played well as a team and recorded 17 assists which are a season-high for the Mariners. 22 turnovers made it tough for the Mariners to keep their foot on the gas as the Tornadoes press forced errant passes.
How It Happened:
1st Quarter:
The Mariners were all over the Tornadoes early, going on a 10-0 run to force a Talladega timeout. The Tornadoes did not record their first points until the 3:17 mark when they hit a three to make it a 12-3 game. Sonia Forney was aggressive and scored seven points and grabbed four rebounds in the first quarter.
2nd Quarter:
Coastal Georgia maintained its aggressiveness and eight points by Gabby Litvak allowed the Mariners to take a 37-26 lead into the break. Coastal Georgia led by 17 at one point in the game, but the Tornadoes were able to cut into the lead late thanks to Makayla Transou dropping nine of her 31 in the second quarter.
3rd Quarter:
In this quarter, the Tornadoes were able to grab their first lead going up 50-49. A combination of Amayla Sharif going for eight points in the quarter and nine turnovers by the Mariners allowed the Tornadoes to tie the game at 50-50 heading into the final quarter of play.
4th Quarter:
Two Makayla Transou threes within 50 seconds of each other allowed Talladega to its biggest lead of the game at six. A late Sonia Forney layup kept the Mariners within three, but after a defensive stop, they were not able to capitalize as the Tornadoes went on to snap their nine-game losing streak.
