Mariners Dominate 3rd Quarter Seals First Conference Win of the Season

THOMASVILLE, Ga.- The Coastal Georgia women's basketball team (2-15, 1-7) notched its first Sun Conference win of the season in convincing fashion over Thomas University (1-15, 0-8) to snap a 12-game losing streak. The Marines took the game 60-48 on Saturday afternoon.

The Mariners were led by Joyce Jordan and Andranique Voorhies who turned in stellar defensive performances. The two combined for eight blocks and four steals while also putting in 20 points.

The Mariners' eight blocked shots are the most by a Sun Conference team in a game this season.  

On the offensive side, Nicole Hofmann and Sonia Forney led the way with 13 and 12 points performances, respectively. Hofmann drilled three three-points while Forney went an efficient 6-9 from the field.

Freshman Alana Veiga notched the first point of her collegiate career against the Night Hawks as she was 1 of 10 Mariners to score in the game. 

Coastal Georgia limited its turnovers to just 13 and received excellent production from the bench which had 31 points. 

For the Night Hawks, Jade Studamire played 38 minutes and recorded 28 of the team's 48 points. Destiny Hill played a solid game as well, dropping in 13 points while also recording 16 rebounds and six steals. Only six Night Hawks played in the game, four of them scoring points.

How It Happened:

1st Quarter:

  • Gabby Litvak drained her 30th three-pointer of the season just six seconds into the game to get the Marines started strong.
  • Jade Studamire answered back for the Night Hawks who then went on an 11-2 run to an early lead before back-to-back Nicole Hofmann threes tied the game at 11.
  • Studamire game Thomas 16-13 lead going into the second quarter as she drained a three with the buzzer sounding.

2nd Quarter:

  • The second quarter remained a back-and-forth affair. Neither team held more than a three-point lead and the Mariners went into the half up 28-27.

3rd Quarter:

  • A quick Destiny Hill layup opened up the second half of play, but the Mariners then went on a 17-2 run headed by Andranique Voorhies' seven-point quarter.
  • The Mariners also recorded four blocks in the quarter thanks to Joyce Jordan and Voorhies.
  • Coastal Georgia only allowed four points in this quarter which is the first time they have done so since Jan. 16, 2020, when they defeated Warner 62-39.

4th Quarter:

  • The Mariners kept their foot on the gas heading into the final quarter and were able to close out the game to record their first Sun Conference win of the season.
