Box Score BRUNSWICK, Ga.- The Coastal Georgia women's basketball team (4-15, 2-7) won its third straight game of the season against the University of Fort Lauderdale (2-11) on Saturday by a score of 82-58.
Seniors Joyce Jordan and Sonia Forney led the way offensively, putting up 20 points and 17 points, respectively. Forney also grabbed 13 rebounds to record her ninth double-double of the season. The seniors also came up big on the defensive end, combining for 10 steals.
Freshman guard Iesha Rhodin turned in another double-digit scoring night, recording 10 points on 3-6 shooting while also dishing out four assists. Fellow freshman, Gabby Litvak, recorded a career-high 14 points as she shot 4-6 from beyond the arc.
Nicole Hofmann and Kelsey Leedle combined for 11 points and newcomer Victoria Hickman dished out four assists in 18 minutes.
Evanee Cooper started her third-straight game and recorded four points while providing good on-ball defense for the Mariners.
Freshmen Samara Calso and Alana Veiga also got some run late in the game and combined for four points including Veiga's first three of the season which kissed the backboard on its way into the net.
For the Eagles, Charlette Leurs led the team with 21 points and 12 rebounds while shooting 8-10 from the field. Esther Joseph and Kouraje Johnson also reached double figures, scoring 12 points and 10 points respectively. Britney Carver finished the game with nine points to round out the major scorers for Fort Lauderdale.
As a team, the Mariners shot 42.4 percent from the field and 46.7 percent from beyond the arc. Despite being outrebounded 39 to 29, Coastal Georgia limited its turnovers while forcing 28 of them from the Eagles.
How It Happened:
1st Quarter:
- Nicole Hofmann and Iesha Rhodin got their points early. Hofmann nailed two threes while Rhodin recorded seven of her 10 points in the opening quarter.
- The Mariners took a 23-17 lead in the second quarter after closing on a 10-2 run.
2nd Quarter:
- The Eagles got the game back within two points before Joyce Jordan banked in a three while being fouled and on the next possession, Iesha Rhodin came down and hit a three to increase the Mariner's lead back to eight.
- Similar to the end of the first, the Mariners closed out the half on a 10-4 run and took a 44-32 lead into the break.
3rd Quarter:
- Neither team came out of the break shooting the ball well, but the Mariners increased their lead to 18 before the Eagles hit their first shot of the second half at the 3:49 mark.
- Gabby Litvak, Joyce Jordan and Kelsey Leedle all hit threes in the final 2:30 of the third quarter to put the Mariners up 63-40 going into the last 10 minutes of the game.
4th Quarter:
- Coastal Georgia opened up the quarter with seven unanswered points to increase their lead to 30.
- Coach Denise Hannah was able to empty the bench after that as the Mariners coasted to their third consecutive win of the season.
