Mariners Win Fourth Straight Game

BRUNSWICK, Ga.- The Mariners continued their hot streak on Thursday night, taking down Ave Maria University (14-8, 6-5) 56-54 in the Coffin Gym.

The Coastal Georgia women's basketball team (5-15, 3-7) won its fourth-straight game and tied the season series with the Gyrenes.

Seniors Sonia Forney and Joyce Jordan led the way offensively, scoring 20 and 18 points, respectively. Forney recorded her 10th double-double of the season as she grabbed 15 rebounds to go along with her scoring.

Nicole Hofmann and Iesha Rhodin combined for 11 points while Andranique Voorhies dropped in four points of her own to round out the major scorers for the Mariners.

Evanee Cooper played 32 minutes and was everywhere defensively. Cooper continues to do things that do not show up in the box score but make a major impact on the court.

Kelsey Leedle started the game running the point and recorded two assists on both of Voorhies' buckets.

For the Gyrenes, Grace Field recorded a double-double dropping in 11 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Casey Humphery was the only other Ave Maria player in double figures, scoring 11 points as well. Mckenzi Lyons and Monica Behrend both recorded eight points to round out the rest of the major scorers for the Gyrenes.

How It Happened:

1st Quarter:

  • The Gyrenes jumped out to a 5-0 start before a Nicole Hofmann three-pointer halfway into the quarter got the Mariners on the board.
  • It was a defensive struggle all game with neither team able to string together a big run.
  • Joyce Jordan hit a layup with 21 seconds left in the quarter to tie the game at 11 heading into the second quarter.

2nd Quarter:

  • Ave Maria opened up the quarter on an 8-2 run to get its biggest lead of the game at six.
  • The Mariners quickly answered with five points of their own to bring the game within one.
  • The Gyrenes were up 24-23 before they closed out the half on a 5-2 run to take a four-point lead into the half.

3rd Quarter:

  • Jordan and Grace Field had a back-and-forth battle to open up the second half.
  • Field recorded five straight Gyrenes points while Jordan recorded six Mariners points.
  • Ave Maria closed the quarter up four heading into the deciding 10 minutes.

4th Quarter:

  • The Mariners fell down 45-39 with 7:23 remaining in the game.
  • Coastal Georgia roared back with 10 unanswered points to take a 49-45 lead.
  • Sonia Forney scored 10 points in a row, including six free throws to put the Mariners up 55-51 with 1:25 remaining.
  • A couple of clutch defensive plays by Evanee Copper and Iesha Rhodin along with a Gabby Litvak free throw iced the game.

UP NEXT: The Mariners will host Southeastern on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. in the Coffin Gym as they continue to fight for a bid to the Sun Conference Tournament.
