Mariners Fall to Webber Warriors

BRUNSWICK, Ga.- The Coastal Georgia women's basketball team (1-13, 0-6) fell to Webber International (4-11, 1-4) by a score of 84-67 in their first game back home since Winter Break on Thursday night in the Coffin Gym.

The Mariners were led offensively by Sonia Forney who recorded 24 points and shot 8-14 from the field while Joyce Jordan added 19 points of her own, also on 8-14 shooting. Forney also grabbed 12 rebounds to record her ninth double-double of the season.

Freshman guard Iesha Rhodin finished a team-high three assists and also knocked down a three.

For the Warriors, Jaida Burgess built off her impressive 31-point game earlier in the week with a 26-point performance against the Mariners. She shot 10-14 from the field while Samantha Pacheco added 23 points of her own, including going a perfect 5-5 from the three-point line.

As a team, the Mariners shot 38.3 percent from the field while the Warriors shot 50.8 percent from the field and hit seven threes.

How It Happened:

1st Quarter:

The first quarter was back-and-forth with the Warriors taking the largest lead at six. 10 first-quarter points from Samantha Pacheco allowed Webber Inter'l to take a 21-18 lead into the second quarter.

2nd Quarter:

The Warriors again jumped out to a six-point lead and again the Mariners were up to the task and scored seven unanswered to take a 35-34 lead with 4:10 left in the half. The Warriors scrapped back into the lead, however, and went into the break up 40-39.

3rd Quarter:

The Warriors came out of the break on fire and went on a 14-4 run to take a 54-43 lead before the Mariners called a timeout. Coastal Georgia collected themselves and went on a 12-2 run to cut the Warrior's lead down to one with 2:35 left in the quarter. The Warriors went into the final quarter of play up 59-57.

4th Quarter:

Webber International was able to jump out to another early quarter run in the fourth and went up 65-57. The Mariners were not able to come back from this one, however, as the Warriors coasted the rest of the way to an 84-67 victory to record their first Sun Conference win of the season.
