Coastal Georgia Gets Win in Home Opener

BRUNSWICK, Ga.- The Coastal Georgia men's basketball team opened up its 2023-24 campaign with a big win over Middle Georgia State University on Tuesday night.

The Mariners (1-0) lit it up from beyond the arc, shooting 44.8 percent on 13 makes. From the field, they were just as impressive going 25-50 while also making 12 of their 16 attempts at the charity stripe.

The Knights (0-1) were down most of the game but clawed back thanks to their stingy defense and presence in the paint.

BY THE NUMBERS-
  • Kaden McArthur's first game as a Mariner was as impressive as could be. He recorded for 11 rebounds, 11 assists and tacked on seven points. The point guard made great reads all night and put his team in a position to win.
  • Nick Jiles and Layton Veon managed the scoring load for the Mariners as Jiles went for 24 points on 8-15 shooting including six threes. Veon added 21 points of his own including three alley-oop dunks. Jiles also added five assists while Veon grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds.
  • Salle Wilson also had a good outing, going for 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.
  • David Felix finished with five boards and four points including a huge dunk late in the game to help the Mariners ice it.
  • Brice Langford added four points and two rebounds including a big dunk early in the second half.
  • Aaron Daniels added a corner three and Jamill Giles put in a nice layup to round out the scorers for Coastal Georgia.
COACHES CORNER- Jesse Watkins

"Great win. Especially over a team like Middle Georgia. We've been haunted by Middle Georgia over the last couple of years and getting the win over them was a good one for us."

"Very productive minutes from our newcomers. Kaden gave us good minutes. Salle was just Salle. He was everything we thought he would be. And the great leadership and scoring from Layton and Nick was just icing on the cake. Having (Layton and Nick) on the floor made a big difference."

"I loved the way we shared the ball. Guys gave up a shot to give a guy a better shot, I haven't seen that in a while. Aaron Daniels played very productive minutes for us as well and did what we asked him to do. Our guys just played hard, we told them it would be a dog fight and they played well."

PLAYERS PERSPECTIVE- Kaden McArthur

"It was a good game. We did a good job at executing the scouting report and taking advantage of little things that we saw and I think I made the right plays."

"We talked about staying together. Having a new group of guys you may not be as prepared for late-game situations but the main thing was just staying together, staying on one accord and we did that well."
