Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Mariners Complete 14-Point Comeback to Start 2-0

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- Down 14 points at the half, the Coastal Georgia men's basketball team fought all the way back to take a 72-69 win against Dalton State in the first game of the SSAC/SUN Challenge on Thursday night.

The Mariners (2-0) gave up 37 points in the first half and only mustered up 23 in what looked like the beginnings of an easy win for the Roadrunners (1-2). However, Coastal Georgia had other ideas.

Layton Veon had just two points in the first half, but scored 9 of the Mariners 13 points coming out of the break with Brice Langford recording the other four.

Salle Wilson and Nick Jiles then took their turn scoring the ball, as Wilson dropped 14 second-half points including two big threes while Jiles recorded 11 in the second-half, also hitting two threes to help cut into Dalton State's lead.

Down 10 with 11:16 left in the game, the Mariners went on a scorching 18-7 run to take a one point lead thanks to two clutch free throws by freshman Jeremiah Camara.

Great on-ball defense by AJ Muller, DJ Taylor and Wilson helped the Mariners finish off the late-night comeback and start 2-0 for the first since the 2018-19 season.

BY THE NUMBERS-
  • Jiles led all scorers with 21 points despite fouling out late in the game. He also showcased his defense, adding two steals and a block.
  • Wilson took over in the second half to finish with 16 points while grabbing four boards and also adding two steals and a block.
  • Veon finished the game with 11 points and three assists as Kaden McArthur added eight points and three assists of his own.
  • Langford finished with eight points, six rebounds, three steals and three blocks as he held down the paint.
  • David Felix, Muller and Camara combined for the rest of the Mariners eight points.
  • As a team, the Mariners combined for nine blocks and 10 steals, and shot a blistering 46.2 percent from three in the second half after shooting just 16.7 percent from outside in the first.
