No. 25 Mariners Soar Past the Eagles

BRUNSWICK, Ga.- The Mariners put on a clinic both offensively and defensively in their Friday doubleheader wins against Avila University (13-10).

The No. 25 Coastal Georgia softball team (15-5, 2-1) shut out the Eagles in both games, winning by a score of 8-0 both times.

Catcher Kayla Rowell had a huge game one, recording two homers and four RBIs including a two-run shot in the bottom of the fifth for an unconventional walk-off as it ended the game thanks to the "eight-run rule."

Pitchers Bryce Peacock and Hayley Dickerson did what they do best: strikeout batters and don't allow runs. The two combined for 13 strikeouts and allowed just five hits over their 9.0 innings in the circle. Dickerson, back-to-back Sun Conference Pitcher of the Week winner, is now 9-3 in the circle with a dazzling 0.80 ERA.

GAME 1:
  • It was nothing but Mariners from the first pitch onto the last on a gorgeous Friday afternoon in Brunswick.
  • Avila was able to keep things close for a while in game one, but McCall Maret was able to reach first safely on an error which allowed Sarah Thinger to cross home plate for the first run of the day in the bottom of the third.
  • In the fourth inning, Kayla Rowell hit a bomb over the right field fence following a line drive single from Melani Jones to put the Mariners up 3-0.
  • The Eagles had the looks of a two-out rally after a triple to left field put them in striking distance in the top of the fifth. However, Dickerson buckled down and struck out the next batter to avoid allowing a run to score.
  • After a Thinger walk and a Bryce Peacock sac-bunt, Maret again made things happen. The senior third baseman hit a towering shot to right field that rolled back to the fence allowing her reach third and Thinger to score.
  • Julianna Bellflower got in on the party as well, recording her first double and RBI of the season on a rope to left field.
  • Jones drove in Bellflower with a double and in déjà vu-like fashion, Rowell hit a shot over the center field wall for another two-run homer which ended the game.
GAME 2:
  • The Mariners followed up their five-run fifth inning in game one with a five-run first inning to start game two.
  • Fresh off of striking out the side, B. Peacock, along with Thinger, scored off a MacKenzie Kagee single to left field.
  • With a 2-0 lead in the game already, the Mariners kept pouring it on as Aniston Johnson hit a ball off the left field fence to bring home Kagee and Jones, who had singled earlier in the first.
  • Malarie Peacock drove in the last run of the first inning off a double to left field that allowed Johnson to cross the plate.
  • Neither team got anything going in the two innings that followed, but a Thinger double in the bottom of the fourth got the Mariners eying another early finish.
  • Kagee reached on an error that allowed Thinger to score which was followed by another extra-base hit from Maret that drove in the final two, and eventual winning, runs.
The Mariners have now gone 12-1 since their trip to Atlanta earlier in the season and with eight consecutive home games coming up, the Mariners will look to stay hot.

UP NEXT: Coastal Georgia will host Savannah State at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Mar. 22 at the Brunswick High Softball Field.
