BRUNSWICK, Ga.- The No. 24 Coastal Georgia softball team (21-5, 6-1) defeated Webber International (10-18, 4-6) by a score of 3-0 on Tuesday morning as the Mariners were able to get the game in before the rain.
Melani Jones continues to make history. In her second at-bat of the game she crushed a double down the left field line which gave her career hit number 165 to set a new school record. Jones eventually scored after a sacrifice bunt by
MacKenzie Kagee pushed her over to third and a sac-fly by
McCall Maret drove her in to give the Mariners a 1-0 lead.
Jones wanted to make sure
Hayley Dickerson got her school-record 49
th win however, and hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning to add some insurance runs. Dickerson allowed just two hits and struck out three batters in her seven-inning shutout  to crown her the new leader for wins in a career.
Rori Rhodes and
Malarie Peacock made some truly exceptional plays in the outfield to help the Mariners get their 12
th straight home win of the season. In the top of the third inning with two outs and a runner on second for Webber, Genesis Aviles lined a ball into right field where M. Peacock fully extended and dove to get her out. Had M. Peacock not have made that play, the Warriors could have scored and capitalized on the two-out momentum.
Rhodes recorded the last two outs of the game, the first one she made ranging to her left as she tracked a deep fly ball for the second to last out of the game. The final out was more dramatic, as Rhodes had to sprint back towards the fence and stick her glove out while the ball landed right in the webbing in almost a Willie Mays like fashion.
Sarah Thinger continues to have the hot hand, as she went 2-for-2 at the plate and got on base a third time after she was hit by a pitch. Thinger has now reached first base safely in nine consecutive games dating back to game three against Thomas.
UP NEXT: The Mariners will host Webber again tomorrow, Mar. 29, as they close out the series with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
