No. 25 Mariners Pull Off Sweep Thanks to Cast of Heroes

BRUNSWICK, Ga.- On a chilly night in Brunswick, the No. 25 Mariners swept Reinhardt (RV) by scores of 8-4 and 5-4 on Wednesday. Game one was firmly in the Mariner's control, but game two caused heart rates to rise a bit as the game was decided on the final play in the eighth inning.

The Coastal Georgia Softball team (11-4, 0-0) pulled off a miraculous comeback in game two despite Reinhardt University (9-5, 4-0) taking the lead late in the game.

Junior Sarah Thinger hit the ball extremely well, recording five hits including the walk-off hit to clinch game two of the doubleheader.

"Sarah (Thinger), had a heck of a day," said Head Coach Mike Minick. "I believe she had five hits and was really seeing the ball well."

Aniston Johnson hit her fifth home run of the season in game one, a towering shot to left field with two outs to increase the Mariner's lead to 5-0.

Reigning Sun Conference Pitcher of the Week Hayley Dickerson picked up both wins after pitching four innings in the first game and then came in the eighth inning of game two to try and shut down the Eagles.

GAME 1:

  • Game one was all Mariners from the first pitch. Coastal Georgia drove in two runs in the first inning and two runs in the second inning to go up 4-0.
  • The first five Mariners in the lineup recorded RBIs. Melani Jones and McCall Maret both got theirs in the first thanks to some help from an Eagles error and good base running.
  • Dickerson struck out three batters and allowed just one run in her four innings in the circle. Dickerson now just needs one more strikeout to hold the record for most in school history.
  • Bryce Peacock missed a homer by barely a foot in the fourth inning. The junior launched a ball to right field but had it hit just on top of the fence and come back into play, however, Peacock was running full speed the whole time and able to get a triple while scoring Sarah Thinger.
  • Reagan ThomasElizabeth McGovern and Anna Feil each pitched one inning as they closed down the Eagles who would score three of their four runs in the sixth inning.

GAME 2:

  • The air was colder than normal as game two got near its conclusion. Bryce Peacock had just pitched 4.1 innings, striking out four batters and allowing three runs. The bases were loaded when Anna Feil came in to try and hold the Eagles to just the one run they had already put on the board. However, a line drive by Emily Loveless drove in two Eagles and gave them a 3-2 lead.
  • Feil was able to shut down Reinhardt over the next two innings, but the Mariners were not able to get the offense going as they went three-up-three-down in the fifth and sixth innings.
  • However, the Mariners were gifted with life after a pop-fly from B. Peacock was dropped allowing her to safely reach first base.
  • Jones, capitalizing on the momentum, drove a ball through the left side and was followed by Maret who advanced the runners on a groundout.
  • Aniston Johnson hustled out an infield single to bring in Peacock to tie the game at 3-3 and eventually push the game into an eighth inning.
  • Dickerson relived Feil in the eighth inning and after a sacrifice bunt and single, the Eagles manufactured across a run with the runner placed at second.
  • The Mariners would have to respond again.
  • Rylee Maxwell was placed on second base and quickly moved over to third after Malarie Peacock singled to the right side. Peacock would get thrown out the very next at-bat on a fielder's choice hit by Dickerson, but her sacrifice allowed Maxwell to tie the game at 4-4.
  • Thinger stepped up to the plate with a chance to end it. Thinger roped a ball out to left-center field and watched it bang off the fence as Dickerson, with a less-than-graceful slide, crossed home plate to secure the win.

"This team has a lot of grit," Minick said after the game. "I mean it was a true team effort. Bryce (Peacock) started the game well in the circle and Anna (Feil) really grew up over those last three innings and rose to the occasion after being put in a tight spot with the bases loaded."

Lots of Mariners contributed to the tough win and Minick made note of that.

"There were so many people who stepped up and contributed today," Minick said. "That's what makes us such a complete team is that anyone, on any given day, can step up and make the big play and tonight was a perfect example of that."

UP NEXT: The Mariners improve to 11-4 on the season with their next game coming against Sun Conference opponent Thomas on Saturday, Mar. 11.
