Mariners Fight but Fall 3-1 to Fire

Story Links

BRUNSWICK, Ga.- The Coastal Georgia volleyball team fell in its Sun Conference opener 3-1 to Southeastern (8-2, 1-0) on Wednesday night despite totaling 11.0 more points than the Fire.

The Mariners (3-5, 0-1) outplayed the Fire in virtually every category as they totaled nine more assists, two more digs, nine more kills and 11 more points, but Southeastern was able to capitalize on 15 service errors by Coastal Georgia which on paper made the difference.

Numbers do not tell the whole story, however, as both teams played great volleyball and made the other earn every point.

HIGHLIGHTS:
  • The first set was as back-and-forth as it could be with 12 ties and three lead changes. The Mariners hit an impressive .229 percent and held the Fire to just a .053 hitting percentage in a 27-25 set one win.
  • Southeastern looked destined to run away with set two, jumping out a 5-0 lead. The Mariners answered, however bringing the game to within one point (9-8) but were unable to tie the set or take the lead as Southeastern won 25-22.
  • The Fire again jumped out to an early lead, going up 5-1 before a five-point run at 7-4 mark gave Coastal its first lead since set one as they were up 9-7. The Mariners went on another big run, pushing their lead to 18-11 before a Southeastern timeout calmed them down as they stormed back on an 8-2 run to get within one. Southeastern would go on to score four of the final five points in set three to take a 27-25 win.
  • Coastal had their backs against the wall late in the fourth set as they were down 20-13. The Mariners rebounded as they went on a 5-2 run but were unable to make any further runs as they fell 25-21 and 3-1 in the match.
BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Paula Perez Rosales was back in full force after missing three games. The sophomore recorded 15 kills on a .250 hitting percentage and added three blocks and an ace to finish with 18.0 points.
  • Raevyn Russell led the Mariners with 18 kills on a .355 hitting percentage while racking up four blocks on her way to a game-high 21 points.
  • Setters Rebecca Brown and Sara Hansen were precise passers all night as they recorded 23 and 22 assists, respectively.
  • Jenna Rogers held down the back line as the libero, recording a season-high 17 digs.
  • Cassidy Casey had nine kills and four blocks, two of which were solo as she 12.0 forcefully points from the middle.
  • Sydney Martin, Madison Heskett and Chantiya Johnson combined for the rest of the Mariners 12 kills and four blocks.
  • 12 different Mariners stepped up and recorded a dig in the match including senior Skylar Gribben who had nine and Kira Matthias with six.
COACHES CORNER - Val Every
"As a team we had more kills, assists, aces, digs and blocks. We score more points and it was an excellent all around offensive performance by our team. Where we struggled though was with errors, which is something out of character for our team and that ended up being the difference."

"I want to acknowledge the excellent performances from our outside hitters and our middle, Cassidy Casey, stepped up and made timely blocks and kills when we needed them most. Jenna Rogers also deserves some praise for her 17 digs and overall it was a well played game by our team. I am excited to see what this team can do as we will look to put it all together against Ave Maria on Saturday and throughout the upcoming conference schedule."
