Women's Basketball Travels to Ave Maria in Search of First Conference Win

BRUNSWICK, Ga. - After an 0-2 start to conference play, the College of Coastal Georgia women's basketball team turns their attention to their final Sun Conference game until 2025 when they travel to Ave Maria, Fla. to take on the Ave Maria Gyrenes on Saturday afternoon.

The Mariners (4-3, 0-2 SUN) have hit a rough patch in their schedule, losing two straight conference games after starting the season 4-1. After a double overtime loss to the Warner Royals, CCGA dropped their SUN home opener to the Southeastern Fire by a final of 75-63 on Wednesday night inside Coffin Gym.

Tyler Butler has proven she can be the leader of the Mariners offense as the senior led the Mariners offense against the Fire with 21 points, six rebounds, two blocks, and two steals in the losing effort. The Belleville, Ill native shot a very efficient 9-14 from the field and finished 3-6 from the free throw line. Butler now leads the Mariners offense with 14 points per game while grabbing nine rebounds per contest. Taylor Gardner finished the Southeastern game with 10 points and seven rebounds of her own as the senior now averages nine points and seven rebounds per game, good for third on the team.

Once again, poor shooting from the three point line hurt the Mariners in the contest with Southeastern, as CCGA shot just 1-14, seven percent, from three in the loss, dropping their season average down to 20 percent. The Mariners have shot less than 25 percent from three in all but one game so far this season, a stat that has to change quickly for wins to start rolling in.

The Gyrenes (2-2, 1-1 SUN) come in following a 76-51 win over New College of Florida in their conference home opener on Wednesday night. 17 Gyrenes saw action in the contest, with Gianna Santacroce led the way with 15 points while shooting 50 percent from three. The senior leads the team in points per game with 14 per night, followed by Lavariah Armstead with 10 points per game of her own. The Gyrenes score 72.3 points per game as a team while allowing just 59.3 to opponents.

This will be the 15th meeting between the two programs with CCGA holding a 9-5 series lead. Ave Maria has won the last two meetings in the series and the last three in Florida.

Tip off is set for 2:00 p.m. from the Tom Golisano Field House.
