BRUNSWICK, Ga. - Following their lengthy break from the court due to the Thanksgiving holiday, the College of Coastal Georgia women's basketball team returns to action this Saturday as they travel to Tifton to take on the Fillies of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in non-conference action.
The Mariners (5-4, 0-3 SUN) have yet to win a Sun Conference game this season and that task will have to wait until the new year as CCGA finishes out 2024 with three non-conference games, two of which come against the Fillies. The Mariners, however, have won five straight non-conference matchups, and are 5-1 in such games this season.Â
CCGA has gotten stellar production from two seniors playing their final collegiate games this season as Morgon Webb and Tyler Butler are looking to get the Mariners back into the postseason for the first time since the 2018-19 season, as both come into the weekend averaging 18 points per game, with Butler shooting the ball almost 60 percent from the field. Webb has been the clear three point threat as the Knoxville, Tenn. native has made 13 on the season, which easily leads the team, as the rest of the Mariners have combined for just 20 made threes on the season.Â
Speaking of shooting from distance, it has been a problem for the Mariners for most of the season as they have only made five or more three pointers in a game twice this season despite shooting double digit threes in every single game this season and even shooting 15 or more in all but two of the contests. CCGA brings in a three point percentage of 21 percent, which stands lower than their mark a season ago.Â
The Mariners defense has been keeping them in most of their games this season as the squad averages just 56 points allowed to opponents per game, while ranking inside the top 10 for most of the beginning of the season in defensive efficiency in the country. CCGA did not give up more than 60 to an opponent until their first SUN game, and have not given up more than 60 to a non-conference opponent once this season.Â
The Fillies (5-5, 0-2 SSAC) come in riding a three game winning streak including an 84-65 win over Paine College last time out on December 3. Back on November 14, the Fillies did drop their first ever SSAC Conference game to Middle Georgia State by 11, a team that the Mariners have beaten twice this season. ABAC can score the basketball averaging just under 72 points per game while shooting almost 40 percent from the field, but they do allow their opponents to score their fair share as well giving up 64 points a night on 38 percent shooting. Shakiria Chaney comes in as the leading scorer for the Fillies, averaging 21.6 points per night on 52 percent shooting. Only one other Fillie averages in double figures, that being Reese Riddle who scores 11.6 per contest.Â
Tip off is set for 2:00 p.m. from Gresette Gymnasium.Â
