Turnovers Hurt Mariners in Loss to Fire

BRUNSWICK, Ga. - The College of Coastal Georgia women's basketball team dropped their fifth consecutive contest, losing by a final of 62-48 to the Southeastern Flames.

The Mariners (7-17, 1-11 TSC) shot just 44 percent from the free throw line and turned the ball over 20 times, which, coupled with a slow start offensively,  foiled any hopes of a comeback victory.

Southeastern (18-7, 9-3 TSC) started the game on a 14-0 run before a jumper by Ja'khyla Johnson put the Mariners on the board for the first time with 4:42 on the clock in the first quarter. Morgon Webb immediately followed with a three pointer, and while she missed the free throw to make it a four point play, Andranique Voorhies cleaned up the miss to give Coastal Georgia a five point swing and cut the deficit in half. Webb followed with another three to cap a 10-0 run from the Mariners and make the score 14-10. Both teams traded baskets to finish the quarter, Southeastern took a 20-13 lead into the second.

In the second, Southeastern's lead grew to as many as 13 before the Mariners went on a small 5-0 run in the later stages of the half to cut the deficit to eight, and Southeastern took a 36-28 lead into the half.

Webb led the Mariners in scoring with 14 at the break, followed by Johnson with seven. For the Flames, Kassidy Jones led the way with nine.

Both teams continued to trade blows in the third quarter, including four straight points by Sonia Forney to cut the deficit to six with two minutes left in the quarter, but a late surge by the fire sent us to the fourth quarter as Southeastern led 50-40.

The lead didn't hit single digits again until the 2:42 mark when a  layup by Webb cut the deficit to eight, but it was too little too late as a 6-0 run from the Fire pushed the lead to 14 and was too much to overcome in the end as the Mariners fell by a final of 62-48.

Webb finished as the leading scorer for the Mariners with 16 as Johnson finished with 11. Sonia Forney added 12 rebounds while Voorhies grabbed 10 of her own.

The Mariners will be back in action next on Wednesday as they travel to Warner University. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m.
