BRUNSWICK, Ga. - It was a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader sweep for the College of Coastal Georgia softball team, defeating Columbia College by a final of 4-0 in game one and a 2-0 final in game two.
Game One: CCGA 4, Columbia 0
Both sides went quietly in their halves of the first, and with starter Bryce Peacock dealing in the circle, the Mariners (11-3) got their first hit in the bottom of the second with a leadoff single from Zoe Johnston-Hadaway, who stole second two batters later. Mackenzie Southerland drew a one out walk which was followed by a single from Emma Jones to load the bases with just one out in the inning. After Julianna Batts struck out, Sarah Thinger got the Mariners on the board with a two out, two RBI single into left, but was thrown out trying to stretch to second, and the Mariners led 2-0 going into the third inning.
The Koalas (3-8) got two runners on base in the top of the third thanks to the free pass, but Peacock stranded the pair with a strikeout to keep the shutout intact. In the bottom half, Riley Mills led the inning off with a single and pinch runner Jordyn Krieg made it to third but was stranded, leaving the score 2-0 going into the fourth.
Both sides stranded a pair in the fourth, and with Peacock still going strong in the circle in the fifth, the Mariners used four straight singles, the last by Alyssa Haggerty extended the lead to 3-0, and that was the score going into the sixth.
Peacock once again kept the Koalas off the scoreboard in the top of the sixth, and once again the Mariners struck in the bottom half, this time thanks to a double from Rylee Mills that made the score 4-0 going into the seventh and final inning.
Elizabeth McGovern got the call from head coach Mike Minick to finish the game, as she completed a three up three down top of the seventh to preserve the shutout and get the game one win for the Mariners.
Peacock went six innings allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out nine and picked up her sixth win of the season. Mills produced a three hit afternoon with a run scored and an RBI, with Hadaway and Jones both adding multi hit performances. As a team, the Mariners went for 11 hits compared to just one by the Koalas.
Game Two: CCGA 2, Columbia 0
Mills got the start in the circle in game two of the double header and, despite giving up two singles in the first frame, got out of the inning unscathed with the score still tied at 0-0. The Mariners were also unable to spark any offense in the first, moving us to the second with a tie game.
Columbia once again threatened in the top of the second, getting their first two runners on via a walk and a single. Mills once again settled into the inning, striking out the side after that and stranding another pair of Koala runners, keeping the score tied. In the bottom half, Rori Rhodes got the first hit for the Mariners with a two out double, but was unable to come around to score as we went to the third still tied at zero.
The Mariners finally broke through in the third, cashing in a one out double by Alyssa Haggerty and taking advantage of an error by the Koalas. One batter later, Mills singled into center, scoring another for CCGA, and making the score 2-0 headed to the fourth.
The Mariners loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth with two singles and a walk, but were once again unable to add on, and took their 2-0 lead into the fifth.
Neither team made any noise in the fifth or the sixth, and in the seventh Mills sat down the Koalas, only surrendering one hit and cementing the double header sweep for the Mariners.
Rhoades finished with two hits in game two, while Rylee Mills recorded a hit and an RBI along with the win in the circle, her third of the season.
The Mariners are back in action on Friday when they host Thomas University for an afternoon double header. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
