Mariners Earn 13th Consecutive Win with Double Header Sweep of Wolves

BRUNSWICK, Ga. - The Coastal Georgia softball team picked up their 13th consecutive win on Tuesday afternoon, sweeping both ends of a double header with the Wesleyan Wolves, winning game one 5-0 before winning game two 12-1 in five innings.

Game One: CCGA 5, Wesleyan 0

Elizabeth McGovern made the start in the circle in game one, and after sitting down the Wolves (3-10) in the top half of the inning, her offense wasted no time giving her a lead. In the bottom half, Sarah Thinger started the game with a leadoff walk, stole second, and came around to score on an RBI double from Bryce Peacock. That was all the Mariners (20-3, 3-0 TSC) could get in the first, as they led 1-0 going into the second inning.

McGovern sat down the Wolves in order in the top of the second, and in the bottom half, the Mariners did their most damage of the game, scoring three runs. Zoe Johnston-Hadaway started the inning with a single and a stolen base, Mackenzie Kagee added a single, and Julianna Batts followed that up with a single of her own, scoring Hadaway. Later in the inning, a two run error helped the Mariners scoring Batts and Kagee, making the score 4-0 going into the third.

Both sides were stifled until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Mariners added on to their lead when a double steal with runners on the corners brought home Emma Jones to score the fifth run of the game for the Mariners.

In the top of the fifth, Peacock relieved McGovern in the circle, pitching three innings of hitless relief, walking none and striking out seven of the nine batters she faced to keep the Wolves off the board and secure the game one victory for the Mariners.

Peacock finished the day 2-2 at the plate with an RBI and a walk, with six other Mariners recording at least one hit. McGovern went four innings in the winning effort, allowing just two hits and no runs with a pair of strikeouts, picking up her third win of the season.

The duo of Peacock and McGovern allowed just two hits to the Wolves offense, and retired the last 12 Wolves batters in order to round out one of their better days in the circle.

Game Two: CCGA 12, Wesleyan 1

It seemed like game two of the double header was shaping up to be the same low scoring game for the Mariners, as they went down in order in the first inning.

In the second, starting pitcher Jordyn Krieg allowed just one runner to reach but stranded her, giving the game back to her offense with a tie ballgame.

In the bottom of the second, the Mariners exploded for six runs on five hits and two Wesleyan errors. The inning started with back-to-back singles from Rylee Mills and Mackenzie Southerland, with Southerland coming around to score on a throwing error. Later, Rily Andrews singled scoring Hadaway, Emma Jones got a two RBI groundout, Rori Rhodes doubled home a run, and Peacock singled home the final run of the inning, making the score 6-0 going into the third inning.

In the third inning, Krieg did load the bases with just one out, but worked out of the jam to keep the shutout intact and send her offense back out to increase the lead.

In the third, the Mariners loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a single from Kagee, and Riley Maxwell drew a walk to score a run making it 7-0 Mariners. Batts singled up the middle one batter later scoring another run. Rhodes followed with a two RBI single of her own, and both Peacock and Mills drew walks, scoring another. All in all, the Mariners scored five runs in the inning on just three hits, and we went to the fourth with an 11-0 lead for CCGA.

In the fifth, the Wolves finally cracked the scoreboard, cashing in a leadoff hit by pitch which came around to score on a groundout from Samantha Bowen. In the bottom half, Batts singled home Kagee to get the run right back, making the score 12-1 going into the fifth inning.

In the fifth, Mills came in to pitch the final frame, and despite giving up a leadoff single, got the next three batters in order to get the 12-1 win for the Mariners, their 13th consecutive win.

Rhodes finished game two 2-3 at the plate with a pair of RBI's, and Andrews went 2-2 with two runs scored. Krieg went four innings in the circle allowing just two hits and one earned run, while Mills finished the game in the final inning with just one hit allowed.

The Mariners are back in action on Wednesday afternoon when they welcome in the New College of Florida Mighty Banyan for a double header, beginning at 1 p.m.
