Softball Splits Twin Bill with Royals

LAKE WALES, Fla. - The Coastal Georgia softball team split their Friday afternoon twin bill with the Warner Royals, winning game one by a 4-0 final before falling in game two by a 3-1 final.

Game One: CCGA 4, Warner 0

The first hit of the game came in the second inning from the Mariners (29-7, 10-4 TSC) on a one out single from Julianna Batts, but the inning came to an unceremonious end when Rily Andrews was called out for leaving early. Starting pitcher Bryce Peacock sat the Royals (17-23, 5-9 TSC) down in order once again in the bottom half, and the game moved to the third tied at zero.

CCGA broke through for a pair of runs in the third inning to put the first runs of the game on the scoreboard. Mackenzie Southerland started the inning by reaching on a hit by pitch, and three batters later, Peacock mashed her sixth home run of the season and 22nd of her career to give the Mariners a 2-0 lead into the bottom half.

After the Royals went down in order once again, the Mariners added on to their lead in the fourth. Andrews reached with one out thanks to an error by the Royals, stole second, and moved to third on a Batts groundout. MacKenzie Kagee drew a two out walk, and Mackenzie Southerland followed with a double into deep center, scoring the pair and putting the Mariners up 4-0. Warner did get their first hit of the game in the bottom half, but could not get her across to send the game to the fifth with a 4-0 Mariner lead.

Peacock walked in the fifth but that was all the offense, and in the bottom half, the Royals had their best chance to cut into the lead. All with two outs in the inning, two straight walks and a single loaded the bases for Moore. Sarah Thinger saved the inning on a diving stop, ending the inning and preserving the 4-0 lead.

The Mariners went down in order in the top of the sixth, but so did the Royals as the game moved to the seventh with the same score.

The Mariners got the bases loaded in the top of the seventh thanks to a single from Southerland, a fielders choice from Thinger, and a hit by pitch to Rhodes. Despite getting the bases loaded, they were stranded loaded after three straight outs ended the inning. In the bottom half, Peacock sat down the Royals in order to end the game and give the Mariners the game one victory.

Southerland finished the game 2-2 with a double and two RBI's, and Peacock finished 1-3 at the plate with a home run and two RBI's. In the circle, Peacock picked up her 12th win of the season going the full seven innings allowing just three hits and four walks with five strikeouts.

Game Two: CCGA 1, Warner 3

After the Mariners went down in order in the top of the first, the Royals promptly loaded the bases with three straight singles with two outs. Mills settled down after the singles and got the next batter to fly out to end the inning and keep the score tied.

The Mariners once again went down in order in the second, and the Royals answered this time with a pair of runs, their first of the day, to take a 2-0 lead. Mills looked like she was getting out of the inning, but a tough ground ball ate up Emma Jones at short and got by to score the pair of unearned runs.

In the third, Batts got the first hit of the game for CCGA with a leadoff single, but three straight outs ended the momentum just as quick as the Mariners got it. Warner then got two runners in scoring position in the bottom half, but Mills worked around the traffic once again to keep the deficit at two going into the fourth.

In the top of the fourth with two outs, Mills got the inning started with a single, and Andrews followed with a single of her own to get a pair on with two out. Alyssa Haggerty followed with a hard ground ball to third, but the third baseman made a great play to spear the ball and get the final out of the inning. The Royals did get their leadoff hitter on thanks to another error, but could only get her to second where she was stranded.

In the fifth, the Mariners got a pair of runners on thanks to singles from Batts and Jones, and both moved into scoring position thanks to a wild pitch. Once again the Mariners stranded both runners and could not get on the board to chip into the lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Royals added onto their lead thanks to a leadoff solo home run from Roland to take a 3-1 lead into the sixth.

In the sixth, the Mariners finally got onto the scoreboard from a solo home run from Peacock, cutting into the lead down to 3-1. The home run from the senior was her second of the day, seventh of the year, and 22nd of her career. The one run was all CCGA could get going into the bottom of the sixth. The Royals got a pair of runners on in the bottom half, but Elizabeth McGovern, who replaced Mills in the inning, rolled a double play to end the inning.

In the seventh, Southerland started the inning with a hit by pitch, but that was all the Mariners could muster as they dropped game two by a 3-1 final.

Batts finished 2-3 on the game and had two of the six Mariner hits. Peacock finished game two 1-3 at the plate with the lone run scored and RBI of the game. Mills went 5.1 innings in the circle, allowing seven hits, three runs, one earned, and three walks with one strikeout.

The rubber match between the Royals and Mariners will commence Saturday afternoon from Daly Field. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
