Box Score MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Coastal Georgia softball team won their second straight Sun Conference Regular Season Championship on Friday afternoon after taking the rubber match with the St. Thomas Bobcats by a 1-0 final.
As to be expected with two of the best pitchers in the conference, the third game of the series and final game of the regular season was a pitching duel, as both sides combined for just seven hits on the afternoon, and only had one after the fourth inning.
Sarah Thinger started the game with a leadoff walk and moved to second on a sac bunt from
Rori Rhodes, but that was all the offense produced from either side in the first inning.
After sitting the Mariners (35-10, 15-6 SUN) in order in the top half. the Bobcats (35-10, 14-7 SUN) got a leadoff single from Anna Toon in the bottom of the second.
Bryce Peacock didn't allow the pressure to get to her and retired the next three batters in order to send the game to the third still tied 0-0.
In the third, the Mariners struck for their one and only run of the afternoon.
Alyssa Haggerty started the inning with a single and immediately stole second. Thinger dropped down a sac bunt with one out to move Haggerty to third, and Rhodes came through with an RBI single into right field to give the Mariners a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the third. The Bobcats got a one out single from Encarnaci in the bottom half, but once again Peacock stepped up and shut their offense down, and the game went to the fourth with CCGA leading 1-0.
Both sides traded hits in the fourth and went down in order in the fifth, but in the sixth, the Bobcats had their best chance of tying the game or possibly taking the lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Palacios singled with two outs in the inning, stole second and advanced to third, putting the tying run at the plate in the form of Toon. Peacock got Toon to popout to Thinger at second, and the Mariners avoided disaster and went to the seventh with their 1-0 lead in tact.
In the seventh, the Mariners could not add any insurance runs, but Peacock retired the Bobcats in order once again in the bottom of the seventh to secure the 1-0 victory and a regular season title.
CCGA combined for just three hits on the afternoon, with the biggest coming from the bat of Rhodes who had the lone RBI of the afternoon. In the circle, Peacock threw a complete game allowing just four hits, no runs, no walks, and struck out six.
The Mariners have now clinched the number one seed in the upcoming Sun Conference Tournament, and their first game of the tournament will be Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m. against the winner of the 4/5 matchup.
