Late Run Spoils Mariners Comeback in Miami Gardens

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - Despite hanging in the entire game, a late run by the Florida Memorial Lions proved too much for the College of Coastal Georgia men's basketball team as they dropped their second consecutive Sun Conference matchup by a 68-58 final in Miami Gardens on Saturday night.

Over the first five minutes of the ballgame, it seemed like it would be a long bus ride home for the Mariners (6-9, 3-3 SUN) as they fell behind 10-2 quickly to the high paced offense of the Lions (11-4, 4-2 SUN). CCGA got down by as much as 15-6 until the offense finally woke up thanks to Jeremiah Camara off the bench. WIth 8:09 left in the first half, CCGA went on a 7-2 run over three minutes of game time using five points from Preston Crisp in the process to trim the Lions lead down to four. Three was as low as the Mariners could get the lead before halftime, as both teams were neck and neck through the final four minutes of the half as FMU took a five point lead into the locker room.

Camara and Thaddeus Burns both led the Mariners offense with six while Crisp followed close behind with five. Jason Danso led all scorers for the Lions with seven. Both teams shot efficiently from the field at over 40 percent, but both teams also struggled shooting behind the arc, as the Mariners went just 1-8 while FMU was one shot better at 2-9.

The game turned into a back and forth affair in the second half, with the Mariners doing everything they could to tie the game back up. Salle Wilson cut the lead down to two with a layup at the 13:03 mark in the period, but Florida Memorial found a way to push away once again. McArthur got the lead down to two once again with a three point play at the 8:19 mark, but a quick 4-0 run for the Lions ended any chance of the Mariners tying or taking the lead once again.

CCGA continued to keep the game close in the final minutes, but over the final four minutes of the game, Florida Memorial closed the game on a 12-4 run, their largest of the second half, holding off the Mariners and securing the 68-58 win in Miami.

McArthur finished with a team leading 16 points followed by Burns with 11 and Wilson, who was the lone Mariner to score in the final four minutes, finished with 10. CCGA finished shooting 36 percent from the field and made just two three pointers in the game, which tied for the lowest total this season.

CCGA has one week to recover before hitting the road once again, this time to Babson Park, Fla. to take on the Webber International Warriors. Tip off is set for 4:00 p.m.
