Wilson's Career High Not Enough in Heartbreaker Against Warriors

BABSON PARK, Fla. - After taking the lead in the final seconds, the College of Coastal Georgia men's basketball team was unable to hold onto the lead, dropping a heartbreaker to the Webber International Warriors by a final of 83-82 on Saturday night.

After a Jeremiah Camara layup with less than 20 seconds, Webber laid the ball in the basket as time expired to break the hearts of the Mariners in Babson Park.

Both sides traded three pointers to begin the contest, but it was the Warriors (4-13, 1-6 SUN) who took the upper hand early by taking a 15-6 lead seven minutes into the game. Salle Wilson stopped the run for the Mariners (6-10, 3-4 SUN) and a Kaden McArthur three pointer cut the lead down to just two points later in the half. Fresh off the bench, Preston Crisp nailed his first three pointer of the game to make it a one point game, but that is as close as the Mariners could get to taking their first lead of the game. Webber proceeded to mount an 8-3 run over the next two minutes to build their lead up once again to 27-21 with just over eight minutes to play in the half. With CCGA trying to get back into the ballgame, the Warriors pushed further away with a 12-4 run over the next five and a half minutes of game time, extending their lead out to 13. Crisp ended the run with a three pointer, but Webber closed the half on another 4-0 run to take a 44-29 lead into halftime.

McArthur led the way at the break with nine followed by Wilson and Crisp with six each. McArthur and Crisp also combined to make all five three pointers for the Mariners in the half. CCGA shot just 37 percent from the field as Webber countered with 55 percent from the field on their end of the court, leading to the 15 point halftime lead.

The Warriors controlled the pace out of the halftime break, allowing just two shots to the Mariners over the first three minutes of the half, extending their lead all the way out to 18 points. CCGA finally found their footing in the period on offense, but Webber remained right in toe, not allowing their lead to drop below 15 until the 11:39 mark when D'Andre Jefferson buried a three pointer to cut the lead down to 13 points. As the Mariners kept fighting, it was a run of six straight points for Wilson that eventually cut the Warriors lead down to single digits at 69-61 with 6:33 to play in the game. After it was all said and done, it was a 10-2 run for Wilson and the Mariners to get the Mariners back in the game making the score 69-65 with five minutes to play.

CCGA continued to claw back and got big time buckets late, including a three pointer from Thaddeus Burns to cut the Webber lead down to just one with less than a minute to play, but no basket was bigger than Jeremiah Camara's and one layup with 16 seconds left in the game to give the Mariners a one point lead, their first lead of the afternoon. As the time dwindled down, the Warriors had one chance to win the game. After both teams exhausted their timeouts, Jordan Golden took the inbounds pass and laid the ball in the hoop as time expired to give Webber their first Sun Conference win of the season in a thriller.

Wilson finished with a career high 30 points on 10-15 shooting and 10-15 shooting from the free throw line, followed by McArthur with 16 and Camara with 10.

The Mariners now return home for back-to-back home Sun Conference matchups, beginning with the Keiser Seahawks on Wednesday night. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m. from Howard Coffin Gym.
