Mariners Fall to Lions in Road Contest

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - The top team in the conference proved to be too much for the College of Coastal Georgia women's basketball team as they fell on Saturday afternoon to the Florida Memorial Lions by a final of 77-58 inside the Wellness Center.

The Mariners (8-6, 1-5 SUN) hung right in with the best team in the conference through the first half of the season over the first 10 minutes as the game remained tied going into the second period.

After falling behind 12-4 over the first five minutes of the quarter, CCGA stormed back into the contest, using a 15-7 run over the final five minutes of the quarter to tie the game back up. Peyton Shafer started the run with back-to-back layups followed by back-to-back three pointers from Morgon Webb to bring the lead down to three. As both teams traded baskets with a minute to go, Webb finished a steal with a fast break layup to tie the game at 19 a piece, which held until the second quarter.

Just when it seemed like the Mariners had all the momentum in the game, FMU started the second quarter on a 10-0 run to take a commanding 29-19 lead until Webb ended the run with a three pointer, prompting a timeout from the Mariners.  While CCGA played a much better final five minutes, the Lions (13-1, 6-0 SUN) kept pace and outscored the Mariners 20-11 in the quarter, leading to their 39-30 halftime lead.

Webb led the Mariners with 10 followed by Shafer with seven. Both made three field goals while Shafer was a perfect 3-3 from the field while also grabbing three steals. CCGA improved their shooting from Wednesday night, going into the locker room shooting 40 percent from the floor and 38 percent from three, but still struggled from the charity stripe, shooting just 60 percent on the half.

CCGA came out on fire in the third quarter, starting the period on a 10-4 run, getting five points from Shafer to cut the FMU lead down to just three with 7:20 to play in the quarter. The Lions immediately answered with a 6-0 run of their own to cushion their lead back up to nine as both teams traded baskets for the final two minutes of the quarter, leaving the Mariners just 10 minutes to erase a 10 point deficit, trailing 54-44 going into the final frame.

In the final quarter, Florida Memorial proved to be the tougher team, out scoring the Mariners 23-14 in the period and holding CCGA to just 4-17 from the field in the final quarter to pull away and secure a 19 point, 77-58, win over the Mariners.

Shafer finished with 17 points and four steals while Webb also finished with 17 points. Jasmin Worsley finished with four points and a team leading seven rebounds in the losing effort. Shafer continues to move closer and closer to the record books for single season steals, sitting right outside the top 10 with 37 on the season so far.

Florida Memorial remains unblemished in conference play moving to 6-0 while the Mariners fall to 1-5 in league play.

CCGA will now have a week off until their next contest when they travel to Babson Park, Fla. to take on the Webber International Warriors. Tip off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
