Webb's Career Night Propels Mariners Past Warriors

BABSON PARK, Fla. - Great shooting and a career night propelled the College of Coastal Georgia women's basketball team to their second Sun Conference win of the season as they defeated the Webber International Warriors by a final of 88-64 on Saturday afternoon.

Despite the Mariners (9-6, 2-5 SUN) scoring first on a 1-2 trip from the free throw line from Tyler Butler, it was the Warriors (4-11, 1-6 SUN) who jumped out in front early using a 4-1 run over the first three minutes. Both teams traded baskets and CCGA remained behind until Bre Fowler tied the game with a three pointer at 10 a piece. Starting with the bucket from Fowler, the Mariners ended the quarter on a 7-1 run, holding the Warriors scoreless for the final 3:58 of the first quarter to take a 14-10 lead into the quarter break.

It was all Coastal Georgia for the first four minutes of the second quarter, starting the period on another 7-1 run, fueled by Morgon Webb and Alli Stone, to extend their lead up to 10. Webber ended the run, but in the end, the Marienrs went on a 20-9 run over the first seven minutes of the quarter, getting 10 points from Webb in the stretch, to build their lead up even higher to 15 points. The Warriors finally found their footing in the quarter and kept pace with CCGA to end the period, but the damage had been done as the Mariners led 42-25 going into the halftime break. The 28 points scored by the Mariners in the second quarter were the most in a quarter by the team this season.

Webb led the way with 12 in the half on 5-7 shooting and 1-3 from three as five players had five or more points in the half. Jasmin Worsley finished the half with five points and 10 rebounds. CCGA shot 37 percent in the half and 27 percent from three, holding Webber to just 26 percent from the field and 11 percent from three.

Both teams came out of the locker room with offense on their mind in the third quarter, as Webber outscored the Mariners 28-24 in the period while shooting just under 40 percent from the floor. Both teams shot 15+ free throws in the quarter, with CCGA going 7-21 while Webber went 3-15. Webb once again led the Mariners in the quarter, scoring eight of CCGA's 24 points, propelling the Mariners to the fourth quarter with a 66-53 lead.

While defense lacked in the third for the Mariners, it returned in full force in the fourth quarter as CCGA held the Warriors to just 11 points on 17 percent shooting. Over the first five and a half minutes of the final quarter, the Mariners went on a 17-5 run getting nine points from Stone in the process to regain their 15 point lead. The Mariners went cold over the final three minutes of the game, but Webber was just as cold from the field, as CCGA cruised to their second Sun Conference win of the season.

It was a career day for Webb as the senior from Knoxville, Tenn. scored a new career high 24 points in the victory, while Stone and Peyton Shafer both finished with 14 each. Butler finished with her third double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Jasmin Worsley finished three points shy of a double-double of her own with seven points and 17 rebounds, the most in a game by a Mariner since November of 2023.

CCGA will now return home to prepare for the Keiser Seahawks on Wednesday night. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m. from Howard Coffin Gym.
