Big First Half Spoils Mariners Hopes of Upset

BRUNSWICK, Ga. - A late fourth quarter run was too little too late for the College of Coastal Georgia women's basketball team as they fell to the Florida Memorial Lions on Wednesday night on their home floor by a final of 85-65.

Trailing 45-16 at halftime, the Mariners (11-11, 4-9 SUN) fought until the final whistle, but the deficit proved to be too much as they dropped their second straight Sun Conference matchup.

The Lions (19-3, 11-2 SUN) showed no rust, starting the game on a 17-3 run over the first six minutes of game time until Tyler Butler ended the run with a layup. The Mariners mustered just seven more points in the quarter, four coming from Butler, as the Lions took a 23-12 lead into the second quarter.

The second quarter was all Florida Memorial as they outscored the Mariners 22-4 in the process, holding the Mariners to 2-12 shooting from the field and 0-4 from three in the quarter to take a 45-16 lead into halftime.

Butler finished the half with eight followed by Peyton Shafer with six. Bre Fowler was the only other Mariner to score in the half with two points. CCGA shot just 25 percent in the half, and went 0-7 from deep.

It was a 12-1 run for the Lions to begin the third quarter, extending their lead out even further to 40 points to lead 57-17. When all hope seemed lost, the Mariners showed a burst of offense, going on a 9-1 run getting five from Morgon Webb in the process, as they trimmed some off the big Lions lead. The momentum was short lived as FMU found their offense once again and took a 69-31 lead into the fourth and final quarter.

CCGA came out for the fourth on fire, immediately going on a 13-0 run, fuelled by nine points from Fowler, to show some heart and fire late in the game. WIth 7:52, Shafer buried a layup to cut the lead to 69-44. All in all, CCGA scored 34 points in the final quarter, easily their best offensive showing in the game, but it was too little too late as FMU held on and dominated inside Coffin Gym for the 85-65 win.

Shafer and Fowler both finished with 14 points to lead the team while Butler grabbed six rebounds.

With a Warner loss, the Mariners remain as the sixth seed in the Sun Conference with just two games to play. CCGA returns to action next week as they host Webber International for senior day. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m. from Coffin Gym.
