BRUNSWICK, Ga. - It was a great senior night for the College of Coastal Georgia women's basketball team as they handled their business in their final home game, defeating the Webber International Warriors by a final of 69-52 inside Coffin Gym Wednesday night.
The Mariners (12-11, 5-10 SUN) got outplayed by the Warriors (6-18, 2-13 SUN) in the first 10 minutes of the game as Webber came to Brunswick looking to play spoiler on senior night. CCGA held a slight 6-5 lead halfway through the quarter, but Webber ended the quarter on an 11-6 run to take a 16-12 lead into the second quarter.
Jaiden Ross gave the Warriors one of their biggest leads of the half with a three pointer with 7:22 left in the half, but the Mariners were done playing around at that point. With a three pointer from Bre Fowler, the Mariners were able to spark an 18-0 run over the next five minutes of game time, getting eight points from Taylor Garnder in the process as they commanded the second quarter. CCGA outscored Webber 29-7 in the quarter and shot 67 percent from the field in the process, building out their halftime lead to 41-23.
Gardner led the Mariners at the break with 12 points on 5-7 shooting while Butler followed with eight. CCGA shot 47 percent on the half and 38 percent from three to dominate the first 20 minutes of the game.
The second quarter was just as good to the Mariners as the second as CCGA came out of the locker room on a 9-0 start as they took a commanding 50-23 lead on the Warriors with five minutes and change left in the third. Both sides played pretty evenly to end the quarter, but the game was all CCGA's as they led 55-35 going into the final 10 minutes.
In the fourth, it was all academic as both teams played evenly the entire 10 minutes. Webber ended up besting the Mariners in the quarter 17-14, but in the end, CCGA sent their seven seniors home happy in their final game inside Coffin Gym with a 69-52 win on senior night.
Gardner led the Mariners with 20 points on 8-11 shooting in her final game followed by Butler with 19. Fowler finished with 10 off the bench as all seven seniors made at least one field goal in the game.
With the Warner win over New College of Florida, the Mariners and Royals remain locked together for the final seed in the conference tournament with one game to play. Both teams sit at 5-10, with Warner holding the tiebreaker.
The Mariners return to action on Saturday as they travel to West Palm Beach to take on Keiser. Tip off is set for 2:00 p.m.
