BRUNSWICK, Ga. - After two straight loses by a combined 10 points, the College of Coastal Georgia women's basketball team looks to right the ship in their first home game since January 25 as they welcome in the Ave Maria Gyrenes on Wednesday followed by a road trip to New College of Florida on Saturday.
Currently holding a 10-8 overall record and 3-7 in Sun Conference play, the Mariners are eager to improve their position. Key players to watch include Morgon Webb, averaging 12.0 points per game, and Tyler Butler, contributing 10.7 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. It was a tough week last week for the Mariners as they had leads in both games against the Fire and the Bobcats but ultimately lost the lead and couldn't recover late. Against the Fire on Wednesday,. the Mariners extended their lead to 18 points with three minutes to play in the third quarter. However, Southeastern mounted a significant comeback in the final quarter, overcoming the deficit and securing the win. On Saturday, the game was competitive throughout, with the Mariners trailing by just two points at halftime. In the third quarter, Coastal Georgia outscored St. Thomas 20-13, taking a five-point lead into the final period. However, the Bobcats rallied in the fourth quarter, reclaiming the lead and securing the victory.
The Gyrenes (10-12, 6-5 SUN) have gotten hot at the right time in February, coming into the midweek matchup winners of their last three matchups.Last time out, it was a 69-55 win over the FMU Lions which saw Colleen Shanahan scored 26 points on 11-14 shooting from the field. Shanahan now leads the Gyrenes in scoring with 12.7 points per contest as the Gyrenes now sit in fifth place in the conference not far behind Keiser for fourth place and a host position in the first round.
The Mighty Banyan (9-12, 2-8 SUN) have struggled in their first season in the Sun Conference, going just 2-8 so far and have a trip to Florida Memorial scheduled on Wednesday before hosting the Mariners on Saturday. Sierra Moore leads the team in scoring with 12.2 points per game shooting 41 percent from the field on the season.
Tip off is set for 5:30 on Wednesday followed by a 5:00 p.m. start on Saturday.
