BRADENTON, Fla. - It was a rough night for the College of Coastal Georgia as they fell to the New College of Florida Mighty Banyan on Saturday night on the road.
The Mighty Banyan (12-12, 5-7 SUN) jumped out to a quick 9-3 lead over the first two minutes before layups from Salle Wilson and Jeremiah Camara cut the lead back down to two. By the halfway point in the first half, NCF had built their lead up to nine, as they kept trading baskets with the Mariners (7-14, 4-8 SUN) to keep their lead hovering on the edge of double digits. With 4:59 left in the first half, a three pointer from Diego Eslava gave the Mighty Banyan their biggest lead of the half at 12 points. Over the final five minutes, both teams traded baskets as NCF took a 10 point lead into the locker room at the half.
Preston Crisp finished the first half with 13 points on 5-7 shooting from the field and 3-5 shooting from the three point line as he tried to keep the Mariners in the ballgame. The next highest total for the Mariners was Wilson with six. CCGA shot 36 percent from the field and 37 percent from three, but NCF was a touch better shooting 42 percent on the half from both spots on the floor.
The second half was never close as New College of Florida dominated the final 20 minutes of the contest, outscoring the Mariners 69-42 in route to a 109-70 victory on their home floor.
Crisp finished as the leading scorer with 23 points on 9-14 shooting and 5-10 shooting from three. Jefferson, Wilson, and Zephir all finished with double digits as well.
The Mariners will now try and regroup quickly as they turn around to host the Keiser Seahawks on Monday night. Tip off is set for 6:00 p.m. from Coffin Gym.
