Mariners Take Two From Royals

BRUNSWICK, Ga. - It was a double header sweep for the College of Coastal Georgia softball team as took both ends of their Friday afternoon double header with the Warner Royals for their first home conference wins of the season.

GAME ONE: CCGA 5 , WU 1

Both teams came out swinging in the very first inning of the series, bot scoring runs in the inning. Warner got things started in the top half with a single from Martin who promptly stole second. Berube followed one batter later with a single of her own to score the runner from second and make the score 1-0 going into the bottom of the first inning.

Not to be outdone, the Mariners (26-12, 7-8 SUN) scored two of their own in the bottom half to retake the lead after one inning of play. Kaitlyn Caroline started the inning with a walk followed by a bunt single from Emma Jones to put two on with nobody out. Rylie Smith moved the runners to second and third with a groundout, but her out made the second one of the inning. CCGA got some help from the Royals (9-22, 2-13 SUN) as a wild pitch moved both runners up 60 feet, allowing Carolina to score and tie the game. Rily Andrews, who was at the plate for the wild pitch, stayed patient andd drove a double into left center to score Jones and give the Mariners their 2-1 lead into the second.

Both sides combined for just two hits over the next two inning, but in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Mariners struck again.

With starting pitcher Rylee Mills rolling in the circle, her offense got her an extra run of support in the fourth. After McKenzie Collins reached first on a throwing error, Alyssa Haggerty moved her over to second with a sac bunt. With two outs in the inning, Carolino reached on a walk and Jones came through with the big hit of the inning, an RBI single up the middle, scoring Collins to make the score 3-1 into the fifth.

Mackenzie Southerland and Carolino started the inning with back-to-back singles followed by a walk from Jones to load the bases with nobody out. Mills stepped up next and delivered a two RBI single to extend the Mariners lead to 5-1 with just one inning to play.

In the seventh, Mills worked around a one out single to end the game with the Mariners still ahead 5-1 for the game one victory.

Jones and Andrews both finished with two hits in the inning with Mills leading the way with two RBI's. Mills also went the distance in the circle for her 11th win of the season going seven innings allowing eight hits, one run, one walk and three strikeouts.

GAME TWO: CCGA 10, WU 1

Both sides once again started the game by lighting up the scoreboard, both striking for a run apiece. Mooring drove in Camp who led off the inning with a single in the top half, and in the bottom half, Carolino started the game with a walk and advanced to third on back-to-back passed balls, coming in to score on an RBI groundout from Mills.

After Collins threw up a zero on the scoreboard in the top of the second, the Mariners offense exploded in the bottom half for five runs on seven hits in the inning. Southerland had the big blow in the inning, a two run home run to left center for her first of the season while Mills followed later with a two RBI double of her own as CCGA led 6-1 going into the third.

With Collins still rolling in the fourth, CCGA got her another pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the third inning. Collins started the inning with a two out single followed by Southerland who doubled into right center to score Collins and make the score 7-1. One batter later, Carolino singled into center to score Southerland and give the Mariners an 8-1 lead going into the fourth.

In the fourth inning, Collins once again shut down the Royals offense, and once again the Mariners responded with more runs in the inning. Mills started the inning with a singe, but two batters later, Smith had the big swing of the inning, a two run home run to make the score 10-1.

The big fly was the ninth of the season for the freshman as she now sits two away from the single season home run record in school history.

In the fifth, Brooke Perdue entered into the circle looking to end the game early. Despite allowing a one out baserunner, got the next two batters to fly out to left field and end the game after five innings with CCGA taking the win 10-1.

Southerland, Collins, Carolino, and Mills all finished with two hits on the afternoon with Southerland driving in three of the 10 runs for CCGA in the game. Collins picked up win number nine on the season going four innings allowing two hits, one run, no earned, one walk, and one strikeout.
