The College of Coastal Georgia softball team completed a doubleheader sweep of Abraham Baldwin on Friday afternoon, cruising to a 14-6 victory at home
The Mariners exploded for 14 runs on 14 hits, bouncing back from an early three-run deficit to dominate the middle innings and run away with the win. Coastal Georgia scored in every inning, displaying a balanced offensive attack that overwhelmed the Fillies.
Rylie Smith led the way at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, and three RBIs. Smith's two-run homer in the third inning helped spark a rally that gave the Mariners momentum they wouldn't relinquish.
Emma Jones had an outstanding performance, going 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, three runs scored, and an RBI. Jones was a constant threat on the basepaths, adding a stolen base while wreaking havoc on Abraham Baldwin's defense.
Rylee Mills contributed both at the plate and in the circle, finishing 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI, and a walk. Brooke Perdue also had a productive day, going 2-for-3 with a double and scoring twice.
Julianna Batts went 2-for-3 with a stolen base, while Rily Andrews added two hits in four at-bats with an RBI and two runs scored. Kaitlyn Carolino reached base three times, collecting a hit and drawing a hit-by-pitch, while scoring twice and driving in a run. Mackenzie Southerland added a hit, walked, was hit by a pitch, and drove in two runs.
Abraham Baldwin jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run home run by C. Gore, but the Mariners answered immediately in the bottom of the frame. After Carolino was hit by a pitch and Jones walked, Rily Andrews drove in a run and Southerland followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2.
The Mariners took control with a four-run second inning, highlighted by a two-run sequence that featured Perdue's double and productive hits from Batts, Carolino, Jones, and Mills. Coastal Georgia extended the lead to 8-3 with two more runs in the third on Smith's two-run homer.
The fourth inning saw the Mariners pour it on with four more runs to push the lead to 12-5. Despite Abraham Baldwin adding runs in the fourth and fifth innings, Coastal Georgia answered with two more in the fifth to set the final margin at 14-6.
Emilia Clemons earned the win in the circle, pitching four innings and allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out three batters. McKenzie Collins pitched the final inning in relief, allowing one run on four hits with one strikeout.
The Mariners committed no errors in the contest while taking advantage of four Abraham Baldwin miscues. Coastal Georgia also showed aggressive baserunning with three stolen bases from Carolino, Jones, and Batts.
The doubleheader sweep gives the Mariners a 2-0 start to their season as they look to carry this offensive momentum forward.
