Brunswick, Ga. – The College of Coastal Georgia women's volleyball team got back in the win column Friday night with a 3-0 victory over Florida Memorial at Howard Coffin Gym. The Mariners won by scores of 25-18, 25-16 and 25-17.
The victory snapped a five-game losing skid, which was the longest of the season for the Mariners. The win also was the second for Coastal Georgia over the Lions this season. The Mariners defeated Florida Memorial 3-0 in their second-ever match back on Aug. 27. That triumph also marked the first win in program history for the Mariners.
Coastal Georgia was set to go on the road Saturday for its third straight day of action. The Mariners were scheduled to play Webber International and Southeastern University in afternoon matches in Lakeland, Fla. The Mariners have never faced off against Webber but did face Southeastern in their home opener on Sept. 3. Southeastern won that match 3-1.
Entering Friday's game on the heels of a 3-1 loss Thursday to Columbia College, the Mariners fell behind the Lions at the start of the first set, but rallied to earn the victory. In the second set, the Marines led by as much as 15-5 before winning the game for a 2-0 match lead. They never trailed in the third set.
For the match, the Mariners finished with 43 kills in 96 attempts with only 13 errors and hit .313 as a team. Freshman outside hitter and kills leader Holly Hammer again led the Mariners with 13 kills in 25 attempts. She had just one attack error and finished with a .480 hitting percentage. Hammer also had four service aces and nine digs. Freshman hitter Kelsey Behrend finished with 12 kills in 20 swings and committed just three errors to finish with a .450 hitting mark. Freshman hitter Ariel Lawless recorded eight kills.
Al Aplington paced the offense with 30 assists in 81 attempts. Valerie Cutrone led Coastal Georgia with 12 digs. She also posted six kills.
Florida Memorial had won just one match entering Friday's meeting.
