Volleyball loses pair of Saturday contests in Florida

The College of Coastal Georgia women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Saturday afternoon to Webber International and Southeastern University. Both matches were held at the SEU Sportsplex in Lakeland, Fla. The Mariners lost 3-0 to Webber by scores of 19-25, 9-25 and 19-25. They lost to Southeastern 3-2 by scores of 14-25, 29-27, 25-22, 19-25, 11-15.

With the losses the Mariners fell to 12-10 on the season. They will return to action on Friday with matches against Lander University and St. Andrews Presbyterian before playing Armstrong Atlantic and Francis Marion on Saturday. All four matches are at Lander University in Greenwood, S.C.

In Saturday's loss to Webber, the Mariners had trouble mounting an offense as they finished with just 23 kills in 92 total attacks while making 15 errors. Valerie Cutrone led the Mariners with 11 kills in 18 swings and finished hitting .611. No other Coastal Georgia player came close to double-digits in kills. Al Aplington finished the match with 19 assists.

For Webber, Julianne Dougherty was a standout on the front row as she recorded a match-high 18 kills in 33 attempts. Katie Lindsrom finished with 31 assists. Webber aced the Mariners six times on serves and blocked seven attacks by Coastal Georgia for points.

Against Southeastern, the Mariners saw several players turn in impressive performances in the five-set battle. Freshman hitter Kelsey Behrend, a St. Simons Island native, had her best match of the year as she finished with a match-best 19 kills while also notching 15 digs for a double-double performance. Amanda Kline also had a big match on the front line as she knocked down 17 kills and also had 10 digs for a double-double.

Also for Coastal Georgia, Aplington recorded a whopping 47 assists and led the team with three service aces. Holly Hammer just missed a double-double as she posted nine kills and also nine digs. Georgia Beck led the Mariners with 25 digs.

Christi Limpert and Catherine Coston led the Fire with 11 assists each. Lindsey Fleming did the setting and recorded 36 assists in the victory. Four Southeastern players finished with double-digit dig totals with Katie Trenski leading the team with 19.

The recorded attendance for the Southeastern match was 125.
