BRUNSWICK, Ga. – The College of Coastal Georgia women's volleyball team lost its final home match of the season Saturday afternoon falling 3-1 to Warner University. The Mariners lost by scores of 11-25, 21-25, 25-18, 22-25. The match was the first meeting between the two schools.
The loss dropped Coastal Georgia to 14-16 in their inaugural season. The Mariners entered the weekend with a 14-14 overall record but lost on Friday 3-0 to Webber International also at Howard Coffin Gym. Coastal Georgia will round out the season with road matches at Brewton Parker on Monday and Augusta State on Tuesday.
Down 2-0 in Saturday's match, the Mariners stayed alive with their third-set win. They trailed 20-16 in the fourth set and rallied to deadlock the score at 20-20 before Warner took control again and closed out the set and the match.
In defeat, the Mariners got 12 kills from kills leader Holly Hammer. Valerie Cutrone and Kelsey Behrend followed with 11 each. Cutrone finished with 24 total attacks and made just two errors to hit .391 for the match. Al Aplington led Coastal Georgia with 24 assists. Maggie Bee posted 15 asssits.
Kansas Robison led Coastal Georgia's defense with 20 blocks. She also received 41 serves in the match and made just two errors. Behrend totaled two solo blocks and assisted on three other blocks. Cutrone also assisted on three blocks.
For the Lady Royals, Joelle Warrning posted a game-high 13 kills. She was the only player on the visiting team to post double-digit kills. Symone Carter led the team defense with 14 digs and Jarrah Garner followed with 12. Two other Warner players also finished with twin numbers for digs. As a team, Warner finished with seven aces in the four sets.
