Mariners go five to defeat Brewton-Parker

Mount Vernon, Ga. - The College of Coastal Georgia women's volleyball team had a tougher time with Brewton-Parker Tuesday than it did in the first meeting against the Barons. Nonetheless, the Mariners outlasted their Southern States Athletic Conference rivals for a 3-2 victory in their second conference showdown of the season.

The Mariners blanked the Barons 3-0 earlier this season at home. But on Tuesday, the Mariners needed all five sets to earn the win. The set scores were 24-26, 25-17, 22-25, 25-16, 15-9.

With the victory, the Mariners improved to 11-15 for the season and 5-7 in the SSAC. Also with the win, the Mariners clinched a berth in the conference tournament at the end of the season in Montgomery, Ala., where they will have the chance to compete for the league crown and also a berth in the NAIA national championship tournament.

Against the Barons, the Mariners weren't all that sharp as a team, but in going the distance, they did have several players post some big individual numbers. Lindsay Herman ended up with 15 kills and 18 digs for a double-double performance. She also had seven aces and one block. Holly Hammer also had a double-double with 13 kills and 18 assists. She added eight digs and three blocks.

Also, Joy Ogide was credited with six kills and eight blocks and MK White took part in six blocks. Maggie Bee led the Mariners with 33 assists and served for 18 points.

Coastal Georgia finished with 54 kills as a team and 13 total aces.

The Mariners will be back in action Friday and Saturday for their final two home matches of the season. They host Voorhees at 6 p.m Friday for a non-conference match before facing off with Emmanuel at 2 p.m. Saturday in SSAC play.
