Brunswick, Ga. – The College of Coastal Georgia women's volleyball team enjoyed a successful first day in its Fairfield Inn and Suites Mariner Invitational on Friday, winning both of its matches on its home court at Howard Coffin Gym.
With the tournament serving as their first official home matches of the season, the Mariners defeated Illinois Tech 3-0 in its opening match on Friday before knocking off Southeastern University 3-1 in its second match later Friday.
The first day of the tournament featured seven matches as six other schools are also participating in the two-day event. The action is set to resume at 8 a.m. Saturday with matches scheduled for every two hours throughout the day. The final match of the tournament is set for 8 p.m. on Saturday.
The Mariners will look to sweep all four of their matches when they return to the court on Saturday. They are set to face Oklahoma City in a 2 p.m. contest before rounding out tournament action against Mount Marty College at 6 p.m.
With Friday's victories, the Mariners ran their record to 4-2 for the season. They opened the 2013 campaign, their third as a program, last week at the Volley in the Mountains tournament hosted by Montreat (N.C.) College, going 2-2 on the season's opening weekend.
At home for the first time since their team scrimmage on Aug. 20, the Mariners made quick work of Illinois Tech on Friday, winning 25-21, 25-17, 25-15.
Kara Neisen paced the Coastal Georgia offense with nine kills while Allie Shannon followed with 7. Cayley Meiners posted 13 assists while Maggie Bee totaled 12. Kansas Robison was again strong defensively for the Mariners as she recorded 28 digs in the victory. Meiners also recorded twin figures for digs with 11.
The Mariners had nine aces in the match with Bee serving a team-best four and Alyssa Keeve adding three.
Coastal Georgia also recorded seven solo blocks and eight block assists for the match.
Against Southeastern, the Mariners won by scores of 25-16, 22-25, 25-16, 25-18.
Holly Hammer led the Coastal Georgia offense with 11 kills while Neisen had 10. Amanda Kline and Shannon both added eight each.
Robison led Coastal Georgia with 22 digs while four other Mariners finished with double-digit totals.
The Mariners served 15 aces in the match as a team.
