Mariners sail to easy victories

Macon, Ga. - The College of Coastal Georgia women's volleyball team breezed through its two matches in the Wesleyan Tri-Match Saturday, rolling to a pair of three-set victories over host Wesleyan and Toccoa Falls College.

The Mariners opened with a 25-12, 25-10, 25-7 win over Wesleyan before then topping Toccoa Falls by 25-9, 25-13, 25-6.

In their first match of the day against the host Pioneers, the Mariners mounted an efficient offensive attack with 42 kills in 72 total attacks to hit .486 for the match. Holly Hammer led the Mariners with 10 kills in 20 swings while Allie Shannon posted nine kills in 12 attempts. Kara Neisen totaled eight kills in 12 attacks and Amanda Kline added seven kills in 11 swings.

The Mariners served 14 aces with Cayley Meiners and Neisen both notching three apiece. Meiners started the offense with 36 assists. Kansas Robison led team with 15 digs. Coastal Georgia also was was strong at the net defensively with fivet total blocks for the three games.

In the second match against Toccoa Falls, the Mariners posted similiar numbers en route to another routine victory. As a team, Coastal Georgia had 38 kills in 67 total attacks to hit .463 for the match. Neisen led the team with 13 kills, Hammer followed with eight and Shannon added seven. Meiners recorded 30 assists for the match.

The Mariners racked up 13 service aces in this contest with Maggie Bee recording nine by herself. Again, Robison was the digs leader with 11.

Also, the Mariners again were tough at the net with 10 block assists over the three sets for a total of five blocks.

"It was a great opportunity for us to prove our mental toughness and play well and practice some of the things we have been working on in our gym in a match situation," said Coastal Georgia coach Jeff Huebner of the day in Macon. "I'm very proud of our kids and the work they are doing daily."

Now 9-5 for the season, the Mariners will return home to face Brewton-Parker at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Howard Coffin Gym in their Southern States Athletic Conference opener. Coastal Georgia will remain at home next weekend when it hosts Faulkner on Friday and Brenau on Saturday for conference matches.
