Mariners drop final two matches in Lee tournament

Cleveland, Tenn. - The College of Coastal Georgia women's volleyball team came up short in a pair of matches on Saturday as the Mariners closed out play in the Lee Invitational.

The Mariners (7-5) fell 3-0 to Bethel (Ind.) before losing 3-1 to host Lee in their final two matches in the weekend invitational. Coastal Georgia opened play in the tournament with a split in two matches Friday.

Against Bethel, the Mariners lost 19-25, 14-25 and 28-30. Kara Neisen led the Mariners with 10 kills in 37 total attacks. Holly Hammer added eight kills. Kansas Robison recorded 12 digs for the Marines while Cayley Meiners finished with 18 assists.

Alicia Carlton led Bethel with a match-high 18 kills.

Against Lee, Coastal Georgia won the opening set 25-20 but dropped the next three sets by 22-25, 21-25, 21-25. The Mariners appeared on the verge of going up 2-0 in the match with a 22-18 lead in the second set, but the Flames scored the final seven points of the set after calling a timeout to pull even at 1-1. Lee then won the final two sets for the victory.

In the loss, Neisen again paced theMariners offense with 14 kills, Allie Shannon followed with 11. Meiners finished with 35 assists and 10 digs for Coastal Georgia. Maggie Bee led the team with 22 digs. Hammer finished with nine kills and 11 digs.
