Coastal sets record with 27th win

Brunswick, Ga. – The College of Coastal Georgia women's volleyball team set a new record for wins Saturday with their 3-0 victory over Southeastern at Howard Coffin Gym in their Halloween Smashtown Invitational event.

The victory was the 27th of the season for the No. 25-ranked Mariners (27-1) who finished 26-11 last year to set the previous record.

Coastal Georgia is also 16-0 in the Southern States Athletic Conference and will look to finish out an unbeaten march through the conference when they close out the regular season with home league matches against Brenau and Dalton State next Friday and Saturday, respectively.

With Saturday's non-league win, the Mariners finished the Smashtown event with three wins in three matches. Coastal Georgia blanked Wesleyan 3-0 on Friday and also knocked off South Dakota School of Mines and Tech 3-1 on Friday.

Three Coastal Georgia players finished with double-digit kills in Saturday's contest with Maddie Bounds slamming home 13 balls to lead the way. Emma Anderson added 12 smashes while Allie Shannon followed with 11.

Cayley Miners recorded 44 assists.

Coastal Georgia hit .346 for the match with 50 kills and 13 errors in 107 swings.

Three players also finished with double figures in digs as the Mariners held the Fire to 28 kills and a .119 hitting mark. Jennifer Johnson led the defense with 18 digs, Anderson followed with 11 and Meiners posted 10.

Coastal Georgia finished with eight total blocks.

Carol Reis led Southeastern with 11 kills.
