Coastal men drop game to Morris

Mount Vernon, Ga. – The College of Coastal Georgia men's basketball came up short Saturday afternoon against Morris College, falling 82-78 to the Hornets in the second game for both teams in the annual season-opening tournament hosted by Brewton-Parker.

Coastal Georgia (1-1) settles for a split in the tournament. The Mariners were coming off a 77-74 win Friday against Voorhees in their first game of the new season. Morris (2-0) also won its opener on Friday, clipping the host Barons 79-77 in its game on Friday.

Saturday's game was close throughout as the largest lead was eight points by Coastal Georgia early in the second half. The Mariners trailed 40-38 at intermission.

Coastal Georgia coach Jesse Watkins said the Mariners could not overcome their own miscues in the loss.

"We didn't shoot it well overall, and didn't shoot it well from the foul line, either," he said. "We had open looks, just didn't knock down the shots. We also turned it over too many times."

The Mariners committed 22 turnovers for the game and shot just 38.5 percent from the field, making 25-of-65 shots for the contest. They were 23-of-34 from the foul line.

Derrick Frye led the Mariners in the loss with 23 points, Dominic Early added 20 while Milton Geddes and Corey Harris both scored 10 points.

Early led the team with 12 rebounds and Frye pulled down 10 boards as both players recorded double-doubles in defeat.

Morris was led by Khaliq Williams who scored 23 points.

The Hornets made 9-of-24 three-point attempts.
