Mariners beaten by Blazers

Valdosta, Ga. – The College of Coastal Georgia men's basketball team suffered a 84-70 defeat against Valdosta State here Saturday afternoon as it concluded play in the Holiday Inn Classic.

The tournament was a two-day event over the Thanksgiving weekend hosted by the Blazers at The Complex.

Coastal Georgia dropped its tournament opener to Lee University on Friday night in overtime.

In the loss to the hometown Blazers, the Mariners (4-6) have now fallen in four straight games. Both Lee and Valdosta State (4-1) compete in NCAA Division II as members of the Gulf South Conference.

The loss was the fourth in a row for Coastal Georgia which will attempt to get back on a winning path Tuesday when it hosts Edward Waters College, a team the Mariners have already beaten this season.

The Blazers led Saturday's game by as much as 20 points midway through the second half. Valdosta led for all but two minutes and four seconds of the clock.

Both teams shot it well as the Blazers finished making 31 of 61 field-goal attempts to shoot 50.8 percent from the floor for the game.

The Mariners shot 49 percent as they hit 25 of 51 shots. However, they were only 2-for-12 from the three-point arc.

Dominic Early, Jamaal Rhodes and Marquice Jones all scored 14 points for the Mariners while Corey Harris added 10. Early led the Mariners with seven boards.

Blake Justice poured in a game-high 27 points for the Blazers.
