Pulaski, Tenn. – The College of Coastal Georgia men's basketball team reversed its fortunes against Martin Methodist Saturday afternoon when the Mariners pulled out a 61-60 overtime win over the RedHawks in the second Southern States Athletic Conference matchup between the teams this season.
Coastal Georgia sophomore guard Malik Channer hit a 3-pointer with a second to play in overtime to give the Mariners the win.
Martin Methodist could only manage a desperation shot before the final buzzer.
The RedHawks (9-8 overall, 3-4 league) had beaten the Mariners (6-13-2-5) 94-88 in Brunswick on Nov. 20 in the conference opener for both teams.
"Our guys played well on the defensive end in spurts today," said Coastal Georgia coach Jesse Watkins. "We've been telling our guys just do their job and they did that for the most part in this game."
Coastal Georgia erased a seven-point deficit in the final 2:31 of regulation, sending the game into overtime with the score tied at 54-54.
Senior forward Dominic Early converted an old-fashioned three-point play for the final points in regulation making a foul shot after he was fouled on a bucket with 29 seconds to play in regulation time.
In overtime, Martin Methodist scored first on a three-point shot but Early answered with a trey for the Mariners to tie the score again at 57-57 with 3:49 left.
Again, the RedHawks would go in front on a Caleb Chowbay basket with 2:59 left and neither team would score until a Toderick Davis foul shot with 24 seconds left for a 60-57 lead for the home squad.
The Mariners would get the ball back after a missed three on their next possession, and following a timeout, Channer was fouled with seven seconds to play. The sophomore made the first of two free throws to make it 60-58, and the loose ball after his miss would go out of bounds off the RedHawks to keep possession with the Mariners.
After another timeout, Channer got the ball on the inbound play and drilled his game-winning triple for the Mariners who lost last Saturday at home to Loyola in overtime.
For the game, Early led the Mariners with 17 points including 15 after halftime. He also led the Mariners with nine rebounds.
Jamaal Rhodes finished with 11 points and eight boards while Channer finished with 10 points after hitting the game-winner.
Chowbay led all scorers with 23 points for Martin Methodist.
Coastal Georgia finished 11-of-15 at the foul line. The RedHawks were just 12-of-23 from the charity stripe.
The Mariners will look to make it two in a row Monday when they play at Bethel. The Wildcats defeated Coastal Georgia 87-84 in Brunswick in a game that also was held on the opening weekend of conference play in late November.
