Brunswick, Ga. – A comeback effort led by local product Marquice Jones got the Coastal Georgia men's basketball team to overtime Saturday afternoon against Loyola in a Southern States Athletic Conference matchup at Howard Coffin Gym.
But the late charge by the Mariners went for naught as the Wolf Pack regrouped and wound up prevailing 88-84 over the home squad after extra five-minute frame.
Jones, a junior guard and a former Brunswick High standout, finished with a season-high 27 points including eight of the Mariners' 11 points in the final 2:47 of the second half to lift the home team into a tie with Loyola (7-6 overall, 3-3 league) at the end of regulation.
It was a three-point shot by Jones with 29 seconds left that pulled the Mariners (5-13, 1-5) into a 74-74 deadlock with Loyola. The Mariners had trailed the Wolf Pack since the 10:53 mark of the first half before the trifecta by the hometown player.
At the end of regulation, Loyola played for the last shot. But after a three-point attempt from the corner was blocked out of bounds by Coastal Georgia's Jamal Rhodes with two seconds to play, the visitors missed a second shot out of a timeout as time expired which led to the extra period.
In OT, the Mariners scored first on two Corey Harris free throws. The Wolf Pack tied the score at 76-76 with 3:16 to play and would take charge for good by scoring the game's next five points for an 81-76 cushion with 2:20 left.
Loyola would go up by as much as seven in the overtime before winning by four at the end.
In addition to Jones, three other Coastal Georgia players reached double figures in scoring including Harris (18), Milton Geddes (13) and Dominic Early (13).
Geddes led the Mariners with eight rebounds and also had two blocks.
Jones grabbed seven rebounds while also recording four assists and three steals to go with his game-high point total.
Loyola got a huge game off the bench from Johnny Griffin Jr. who finished with 23 points and 23 rebounds to pace the team.
Nick Parker followed with 20 points, Tre'Von Jasmine added 18 and Jalen Gray finished with 12.
Nate Pierre blocked four shots for the Wolf Pack.
The Mariners will hit the road next week for league games at Martin Methodist on Saturday and Bethel on Monday. They opened league play against those same two teams at home in November.
