McKenzie, Tenn. - The College of Coastal Georgia women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss Friday night at Bethel in a Southern States Athletic Conference match.
The loss was the first for the Mariners in an SSAC match this season and just the team's second in the last three seasons to a conference opponent. While winning back-to-back league championships, the Mariners went undefeated against SSAC teams two years ago while falling only to Mobile in conference play last season.
Also with Friday's loss, the Mariners saw their eight-match winning streak come to a end. Coastal Georgia (12-5 overall, 5-1 SSAC) had won all but one of those matches by 3-0 scores.
Coastal Georgia had been the only unbeaten team in SSAC play going into the weekend. Now, the Mariners have one league loss along with Mobile and also Bethel (11-3, 5-1) which won its fourth in a row Friday night to remain perfect in five matches this season on its home court. The Mariners defeated Mobile last Friday at home. Bethel loss to Dalton State last weekend.
Bethel was able to finish off the Mariners in straight sets, winning 25-21, 25-22, 25-23.
In the loss, Coastal Georgia got 11 kills in 20 attempts from Allie Shannon while also getting 10 kills from Rachel Amundson. As a team, the Mariners finished with 38 kills and 17 errors in 82 total attacks to hit .256 for the contest.
Cayley Meiners assisted on 35 of the team's kills.
The Mariners couldn't stop the hitting prowess of Eloisa Sales, the top attacker in the SSAC. Sales connected for a match-best 23 kills in 38 attempts while making just two errors to hit .553 for the night.
Bethel finished with 46 kills in 96 total attacks with 17 errors to finish hitting .302 for the match.Kaylee Ginnings had 38 assists for the Lady Wildcats.
Coastal Georgia will attempt to get back on the winning track Saturday when it plays another SSAC match at Martin Methodist.
