Mount Vernon, Ga. - The College of Coastal Georgia women's volleyball team started out on the right foot in the Southern States Athletic Conference Tuesday night, knocking off Brewton-Parker 3-1 in the league opener for both teams.
Coastal Georgia, the two-time defending SSAC champion, won the opening two sets before dropping the third and then coming back to take the fourth to finish out the win over the Barons.
The Mariners improved to 8-4 with the win while the Barons fell to 0-2 with the loss. Brewton-Parker opened its season Aug. 26 with a 3-1 loss at former SSAC member school Truett-McConnell. The Barons have not won a conference match since the 2013 season.
The Mariners have now won four straight. They took all three of their matches this past Saturday as they made their home debut in the Mariner Invitational. The team will be back at Howard Coffin Gym this Saturday to play its first home conference match this season against Middle Georgia State. The Knights are off to a 5-4 start in their inaugural season and will play their first conference contest Friday at Brewton-Parker before coming to Brunswick.
Against the Barons, the Mariners got 11 kills each from Kyra White and Jesi Garrett while Allie Shannon also reached twin figures with 10. Alexis Downey and Shelby Sullivan followed with six kills apiece.
Cayley Meiners, who was named the SSAC Setter of the Week on Monday, dished out 33 assists.
Rachel Amundson led the defense with 17 digs, Hannah Mitchell added 12 and Madie Bunge recorded 11.
"Our middle (blockers) and setters connected well tonight," said Coastal Georgia assistant coach Matt Wallace. "It was great to mix up the lineups and get the team some experience as well. Jesi Garrett had a big night on the outside as well."
