BRUNSWICK, Ga. – Behind 10 kills and a .474 hitting percentage from middle blocker Kyra White, Coastal Georgia powered past Ave Maria University 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-23) on Friday afternoon at Coffin Gym.
The Mariners took advantage of poor hitting from Ave Maria in the first two sets, out-hitting the Gyrenes .241 to -.062 in the first set and then .324 to .054 in the second set.
With the match tied at 7-7, a kill from Madie Bunge sparked a 10-1 run that allowed the Mariners to take a commanding 17-8 lead in the set. Coastal Georgia ultimately closed the set with a four-point run capped by White.
The second set was highlighted by three consecutive service aces from Jessica Brown that lifted Coastal Georgia to a 17-10 lead.
In a close, back-and-forth third set, momentum swung in between the two teams. Ave Maria took a late 22-21 led on a Talia Samuels kill. However, two of the Mariners' final four points were the result of service aces by Alexis Downey and Hannah Mitchell. The ace by Mitchell was the match winner.
Ashley Kot recorded a 28-assist, 17-dig double-double for Coastal Georgia. The team hit .270 overall for the match.
Natalie Rosinski and Bre Holder each had a team-high six kills for Ave Maria. The Gyrenes hit just .074 for the match.
Coastal Georgia finishes the regular season on Saturday against Saint Thomas at Coffin Gym at 2 p.m.
