BRUNSWICK, Ga. – Sophomore Addie Pedraza and junior Kyra White each tallied 10 kills during Coastal Georgia's 3-1 (25-16, 13-25, 25-21, 25-18) loss to St. Thomas on Saturday at Coffin Gym. The match was the regular season-finale for both teams as postseason play begins on Tuesday with the Sun Conference Tournament.
Whitney Battoe recorded a match-high 23 kills and hit .550 for the Bobcats. As a team, St. Thomas hit over .315 in all four sets en route to finishing the match with a .367 hitting percentage (41 kills, 5 errors, 98 total attack).
St. Thomas, who is receiving votes in the AVCA Coaches Poll, led from start-to-finish in the first set and was up 20-13. White served up consecutive service aces to pull the Mariners to within four (20-16), but the Bobcats finished the set on a five-point run.
Coastal Georgia came out on fire in the second set, hitting .423 (13 kills, 2 errors, 26 total attack) for that set alone. Up by three, a White kill was the start of a commanding nine-point run to put the Mariners up 18-6. A Pedraza kill ultimately finished the set and evened the match at 1-1.
Down by three, Coastal Georgia saw St. Thomas use a four-point run to take a late 20-13 lead. The Mariners battled back and pulled to within two late on two occasions, including at 23-21 from a kill by Alexis Downey. But Mariner miscues on the final two points preserved the set win for St. Thomas.
Poor hitting by the Mariners resulted in multiple Bobcat runs that put the fourth set out of reach.
Coastal Georgia will host a quarterfinal Sun Conference Tournament game on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. in Coffin Gym. The Mariners will play the conference's #5 seeded team. Due to ties in conference records, that team has not been determined. As soon as the opponent is announced, the information will be placed on the website.
