Volleyball Falls 3-2 to St. Thomas

BRUNSWICK, Ga. – Coastal Georgia volleyball could not withstand St. Thomas' comeback and the Mariners dropped a 3-2 (25-21, 21-25, 21-25, 25-17, 15-10) match on Saturday afternoon at Coffin Gym.

Both Azure Werner and Addie Pedraza notched a team-best 13 kills, while Kyra White had 11 kills. Ashley Kot made a 48-assist, 18-dig double-double. Yorelis Rios Gonzalez tallied 24 digs, while Laney Green recorded 20 digs. Jane Townsend added 10 digs.

The Mariners hit .118 with 57 kills and 91 digs.

In the first set, Coastal Georgia had a slim one-point lead when St. Thomas went on four-point run to put the Bobcats up 17-14. The Mariners fought back and tied the set at 21-21 on a block from White and Molly Fletcher. However, St. Thomas ended the set with another four-point run.

A late 6-1 run helped fuel Coastal Georgia in the second set. Trailing by two, a kill from Werner started the scoring stretch that put the Mariners up 21-18. Although St. Thomas came to within one, Coastal Georgia scored four of the set's last five points. Kot had the final two tallies, scoring points on a kill and a service ace.

Coastal Georiga held off St. Thomas' late surge in the third set. The Mariners had a four-point 21-17 lead when St. Thomas scored three-straight points to pull to within one. For the second set in-a-row, Coastal Georgia scored four of the set's final five points, however, three of the four points were Mariner kills.

St. Thomas posted a strong fourth set in order to force a decisive set number five. The Bobcats hit .306 for the fourth set, making 15 kills on 36 attack and four errors. Coastal Georgia faced a 10-point deficit after St. Thomas went on a late five-point run to go up 23-13. The Mariners held on for a few more points before the Bobcats tied the match on a Krista Kolbinskie kill.

Coastal Georgia saw St. Thomas go on an early four-point run in order to take a 5-2 lead in the fifth set. The Mariners trailed by as many as eight before going on a key five-point scoring streak. An Alexis Downey kill started that run that allowed the Mariners to cut St. Thomas' lead down to 13-10. However, a kill from Carli Batsel and a Mariner attack error provided the Bobcats with the winning points.

Coastal Georgia returns to action on Wednesday with a home match against Warner. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at Coffin Gym.
