BRUNSWICK, Ga. – Coastal Georgia volleyball upended Sun Conference leader Webber International 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-19) on Wednesday evening in Coffin Gym.
With the win and a loss by St. Thomas on Wednesday, Coastal Georgia clinched the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Sun Conference Volleyball Tournament.
Coastal Georgia hit .210 for the night while holding Webber International to a .020 hitting percentage.
Kyra White led the Mariners with 11 kills and Adair Werley tallied 10 kills. Ashley Kot made 35 assists and 17 digs. Werley and Alexis Downey both had five block assists.
Up by one in the first set, a kill from Alexis Downey sparked a timely six-point run in order to put Coastal Georgia up 14-7. However, Webber International answered with a six-point spurt of its own to come to within one. After battling over the next few points, which included a tie at 20-20, a kill from White started a set-ending five point run. A block from Downey and Sam Kepler was the set-winning point as Coastal Georgia took a 1-0 lead for the match.
A key run midway through the second set helped Coastal Georgia to distance itself from Webber International. Another run later in the set helped seal the victory. Kepler had a kill that was the first of three-straight points that allowed the Mariners to go up 23-16. After the Warriors had a block, a kill from Kot and a service ace from Hannah Mitchell won the set.
Coastal Georgia came back from an early four-point deficit in the third set. Down 13-9, a Kepler kill began the first of two key runs. The stretch started by Kepler ultimately tied the set at 13-13. Meanwhile, a kill from Downey sparked a five-point run that lifted the Mariners to an 18-15 advantage. Coastal Georgia went on the finished the set on a three-point run that was started by another White kill.
The Mariners conclude the regular season on Saturday against Johnson & Wales in Coffin Gym at 1 p.m. It will be Senior Day as Coastal Georgia honors its three seniors – Alexis Downey, Hannah Mitchell, and Kyra White.
