BABSON PARK, Fla. – The Coastal Georgia Mariners volleyball team defeated Southeastern University 3-1 on Friday, earning a berth into The Sun Conference Tournament finals. Coastal Georgia will take on top-seeded Webber International for the league's top prize at 2 PM Saturday.
The route to the finals was far from certain, however, as Southeastern took control of the match early after the Fire grabbed a 25-22 win in the opening set.
The second frame was another close affair. The teams were neck-and-neck throughout the set and Coastal Georgia would eventually need two extra points to finally prevail in the contest 27-25.
The Mariners seized the momentum in the third set, soundly knocking off the Fire 25-11 to grab a 2-1 advantage in the match.
Southeastern would not go quietly, however. The fourth stanza was again tightly contested before Coastal Georgia eventually pulled away for the 25-21 win.
Mariners head coach Leah Mihm said, "We played tense in the first set. We had to get refocused on our game plan. Winning the second set was the game-changer. We were able to relax a little bit after that."
She continued, "It will be a great final. We had close matches during the season. We'll be prepared."
Mariners libero Yorelis Rios Gonzalez (JR/Barranquitas, Puerto Rico) established a new school record for digs in a four-set match with 38.
Offensively, CCGA's Addie Pedraza (JR/El Paso, Texas) tallied 19 kills in the match to lead both teams. Sam Kepler (JR/Sacramento, Calif.) added 14 kills while Kyra White (SR/Chicago, Ill.) had 13 and Alexis Downey (SR/Vancouver, BC) had 10. Ashley Kot (SO/Venice, Fla.) racked up 57 assists.
