BRUNSWICK, Ga. – Kyra White and Adair Werley each had 11 kills during Coastal Georgia's 3-0 (25-21, 30-28, 25-17) Sun Conference victory over Ave Maria on Saturday afternoon at Coffin Gym.
Ashley Kot tallied a 26-assist, 12-dig double-double, while Yorelis Rios Gonzalez made 17 digs.
Coastal Georgia totaled 39 kills, nine aces, and 56 digs for the match.
The Mariners got off to a strong start, and quickly went up by 11 as Molly Fletcher's kill made it 19-8. However, Ave Maria capitalized on multiple Coastal Georgia errors and went on a 10-1 run to make it a two-point set. Coastal Georgia was able to withstand the Gyrenes' rally, and ultimately used an Ave Maria attack error to win the set.
After several Ave Maria runs, Coastal Georgia found itself trailing by as many as seven late as the Gyrenes took a 19-12 on Alejandra Suarez's service ace. The Mariners battled back, and behind a key five-point run, tied the set at 21-21 on an Ave Maria miscue. In a back-and-forth battle, Sam Kepler's kill moved the Mariners to a 29-28 advantage. Another Gyrene attack error sealed the second-set victory for the Mariners, who went up 2-0 in the match.
Down by two in the final set, a Werley kill started a timely six-point run that powered Coastal Georgia to a 19-15 lead. The Mariners further extended their lead to 23-16 with another run, this time a four-point spurt that was capped by Kaci Hollenbacher's ace. Although Kaedi Gillman had a kill for Ave Maria on the next point, another Kepler kill and an ace from Downey ended the match.
Coastal Georgia embarks on a five-match road swing for the next two-and-a-half weeks. The Mariners start the venture on Wednesday at Warner. Match time is at 7 p.m.
