Volleyball Sails Past Keiser, 3-0, in Conference Opener

BRUNSWICK, Ga. – Powered by senior middle blockers Alexis Downey and Kyra White, Coastal Georgia volleyball cruised past Keiser 3-0 (25-18, 25-10, 25-20) on Saturday afternoon at Coffin Gym in what was the first Sun Conference match for either team.

Downey hit an impressive .688 in the three-set match, collecting 12 kills on 16 attack with only one error. She served six aces, including four in the first set. White had a match-high 13 kills en route to hitting .524 (13 kills, 1 error, 21 attack).

Ashley Kot set 34 assists, while Yorelis Rios Gonzalez made 10 digs.

As a team, Coastal Georgia hit .253 for the match.

"We were prepared and executed our game plan," said head coach Leah Mihm. "Our passing was on target, which allowed us to run our offense."

Down by one, momentum quickly shifted towards the Mariners' favor as Downey had a kill that not only tied the set at 13-13, but also was the first of six-straight Coastal Georgia points. Downey served back-to-back aces during that run that lifted the Mariners to as 18-13 lead.

The second set was all Coastal Georgia as the Mariners hit .500 (15 kills, 4 errors, 22 attack) and was 9-of-10 on sideouts. The Mariners went on two six-point runs at different parts of the set. Adair Werley's kill started the first run, which was early in the set. A kill from Sam Kepler began the Mariners' mid-set scoring streak.

Coastal Georgia battled back from a four-point deficit in the third set. Tied at 17-17, another Downey kill was the first of three critical points that gave the Mariners a 20-17 lead. Coastal Georgia held off Keiser's attempted comeback, ultimately ending the match on a Downey ace.

The Mariners return to action next weekend with a two-match road swing to south Florida. Coastal Georgia plays at Florida National on Friday at 7 p.m., and then takes on Sun Conference foe St. Thomas on Saturday at 2 p.m.
